Circular between Ilhat and Roquefort-les-Cascades

Circular in the Douctouyre valley with a passage through the top of the cliffs of the Mouillet plateau, which offers a beautiful view of the Ariège Pyrenees in good weather. Once in the village of Roquefort-les-Cascades, you can visit the waterfalls, which have water mainly in spring.

Description of the walk

You can park in the car park of the Ilhat village hall. Coming from Lavelanet, pass Tannière and take thefirst road on the right that climbs towards Ilhat d'en Haut. The village hall is signposted on the right before you reach the village.

(S/E) Head north towards the village.

(1) Take the street that branches off slightly to the right, then leave it to take the path that climbs to the left towards the north and turns south-east after 200 metres. You will arrive at Pas de Mouillet.

(2) Turn left to walk along the cliff towards the north-west, enjoying the view on your left.

(3) At the fork, continue straight ahead into the woods towards the north-west.

(4) At the crossroads, turn slightly right into the Bois du Mouillet, heading north then north-east.

(5) Pass by a beautiful orri (stone shepherd's hut) and descend to the D1.

(6) Cross it carefully, turning left towards Lavelanet for about 40 metres, then descend the path on the right which joins a small canal. Follow it south (left) to the hamlet of La Mécanique, which is a former horn comb factory.

(7) Turn right and cross the stone bridge. Follow the Douctouyre stream. Cross it via the metal footbridge on the left and join the D10.

(8) Follow it to the right for about 150 metres and take the path that climbs left into the Bois de Malby forest to the Col des Escrozes pass.

(9) Cross it and descend southwards. Cross the D1 with caution and reach Roquefort-des-Cascades.

(10) In the village, pass the wash house and take the second street on the left, heading south-east. You will come to a fork.

(11) Turn left and follow the fields until you cross the Douctouyre.

(12) Take the road that climbs northwards. Cross the D10 carefully to reach Ilhat d'en Bas.

(13) In the village, follow the main road uphill to Ilhat d'en Haut.

(1) Return to the junction you passed on the way up, turn right and descend towards the car park (S/E).

A pleasant, easy hike with a lovely section on the Mouillet plateau offering unobstructed views of Roquefort les Cascades and the Pyrenees mountain range in the background.
The path after Roquefort was soggy at this time of year and several sections were impassable, but these could easily be avoided by crossing the meadows on the right.
