The Ariège Plantaurel around Roquefort-les-Cascades

This hike offers beautiful rolling landscapes between the woods of La Balme, Mouillet and small valley bottoms. The main feature of this route is the Douctouyre, a river near Lavelanet, which you cross twice. The highlight is the petrifying Turasse waterfall near Roquefort, a real geological curiosity.

Description of the walk

Park in the Lieurac area at the northern entrance to the village, towards Gouziaud.

Yellow markings (discreet)

(S/E) Head north, cross the Douctouyre. On the small road, at the first fork, turn left towards Gouziaud.

(1) At the entrance to Gouziaud, turn left onto Chemin d'En Barriero. This wide, open dirt track follows the Douctouyre river at a distance, crosses the extraordinary garden (open in summer), passes Fount del Buc and then runs alongside a few fields. As you approach Moulin Neuf, the path becomes a road that crosses the D301 before reaching Carla de Roquefort via a small uphill path. Continue straight on Rue Jonnès.

(2) After this street, return to the D10 and turn left towards Lavelanet. Continue for a few hundred metres until you reach La Verbe.

(3) On leaving this hamlet, at the sign on the left-hand side of the road, turn right onto a small uphill path (towards Col des Escrozes and Ilhat). At the next junction, keep left, following the yellow markings. This path climbs gently through the Bois de Malby to reach the Col des Escrozes. Then descend to the D1.

(4) Cross over to the other side and continue to Roquefort-les-Cascades. You will arrive at the small village square with a pretty fountain.

(5) Immediately afterwards, turn right and follow the sign for the Roquefort waterfalls. Continue on your right and then on your left towards the waterfall car park, a large grassy area with picnic tables by the water's edge.
Observe the petrified waterfalls at the edge of the stream, then cross a small bridge on your right towards the Cascade de la Turasse, a true geological curiosity.

(6) Turn back and cross the bridge with red railings.

(5) At the entrance to the village, turn right towards Bac d'en Haut. Head south through the woods on an uphill path lined with rocks. Pass Rasigot and Palette before arriving at Bac d'en Haut.

GR®® Pays d'Olmes trail markers (yellow and red)

(7) At the crossroads, rejoin the Pays d'OlmesGR®®. Turn left to enter Bac d'en haut. The path becomes a small tarmac road. Pass Bac d'en bas and continue south-east then north-east. Cross the Douctouyre on the Pont de la Pichole bridge then climb up towards Tanière.

(8) At this point, turn right onto the small road marked as a dead end, but there is a pedestrian crossing to reach the Tanière road. Turn right onto this road.

(9) Just before the Tanière exit sign, turn left towards Ilhat. Head north through open countryside and pass a cemetery before reaching Nizard and then Cazal.

Yellow markings

(10) Continue straight ahead on the main road, leaving theGR®® Pays d'Olmes, and you will reach Ilhat.

(11) In the centre of the village, at the corner of a telecommunications pole, turn right onto Impasse de Gréoulou, then immediately right again onto a path that climbs steeply eastwards and then northwards into the Bois de Mouillet. Up to elevation 607, the slope is steep and requires considerable effort.

(12) Ignore all the paths on your right and continue north-east. The path then descends gently into the woods and branches off towards Mane, where you will find yourself back on tarmac.

(13) Continue along Chemin de Mane to the north and rejoin Chemin de la Coume.

(14) Turn left, then 100 metres later, turn right. Pass through the Terrassa housing estate and enter Lieurac.

No signposts

(15) In the centre of the village, take the D1 on your right, then 100 m further on, take Chemin de Roussat on your left. Cross the Ruisseau du Sautel stream and turn left onto a wide path to join Route de Dun at the entrance to Lieurac. Take advantage of the nearby wash house on your right to appreciate its rural charm.

(16) Turn left (west) onto Route de Gouziaud and cross the bridge to return to your starting point on the right (S/E).

A varied and enjoyable route, with forests, small roads, villages and interesting sites. The last climb is quite steep in the early afternoon, so it's tough going!

We didn't realise that we had to climb above the marked path to see the whole waterfall. We passed through some lovely villages. At the start, we passed a craftsman who makes calabashes, but unfortunately he wasn't there! It was a pleasant hike, which we will do again in autumn to see the autumn colours, as there are mainly deciduous trees, and also to see the waterfall and the calabashes.

A very beautiful hike today, without any difficulty. The "Extraordinary Garden", although unfortunately closed at this time of year, is really worth a visit, very surprising and very pretty. The short detour to the waterfalls is still as magical as ever, even after seeing them five or six times. Very pretty views. Perhaps not very busy, in any case, we didn't meet anyone except at the waterfalls (which suited us fine). In short, a beautiful outing that we recommend. The only slight downside (yes, we can call it a "downside") was a little too much "tarmac" for our liking.
Thanks to the hiker who posted it.
In the same area, perhaps a little more difficult, we recommend Les Cascades de Roquefort from Roquefixade.

A beautiful hike recommended in hot weather as it is very shady and has numerous water sources where you can cool off and give your animals a drink. The steep slopes are not recommended for children.

Very nice hike , a few good climbs but no major difficulties, shaded hike
Busy around the waterfalls, so if you want to see them with water, don't wait too long.
Worth doing.

This route is very nice, especially the waterfalls, which were flowing this year. We didn't do the round trip, but after jumping over the stream behind the Turasse waterfall, we took the small path that leads to the upper ferry and the hiking trail.
The pretty village of Ilhat with its superb flower pot decorations.
