Circular route between La Bourboule and Saint-Sauves-d’Auvergne

Starting from the tourist office in La Bourboule – a charming town with superb spa architecture, including the Grands Thermes with its oriental-style domes – this circular walk will take you through the landscapes of the upper Dordogne valley, passing through Saint-Sauves-d’Auvergne, a village designated a ‘Classée Commune Touristique’ in 2016.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Go down the steps from the tourist information centre and immediately turn right, following the left bank of the Dordogne along Quai Jeanne d’Arc. Take the first bridge on the left towards St Joseph’s Church, then turn right onto Allée Bernard Croizat, continuing to the roundabout.

(1) At the bridge, turn left to cross Avenue des États-Unis and then Rue de Belgique. Turn right onto Rue Cohadon Lacoste. Continue straight on at the junction, then pass under the railway bridge.

(2) Go up the steps on the right leading to Rue Godefroy de Bouillon. Continue straight on until you reach Route du Pessy.

(3) Follow it to the right, then turn left at the first junction towards the secondary school. Continue along Rue de la Fontaine to the right until you reach the centre of Le Pessy.

(4) Turn left onto Chemin des Prés Clos. At the first junction, turn left, then pass the “Chèvrerie des Monts d’Or” on your left and head up the path on the right towards the Murat-le-Quaire cemetery.

(5) Once you reach the D219, continue left towards the church, then turn right onto the D609 towards La Banne d’Ordanche. Pass the town hall and the campsite, then take Impasse des Couderts, slightly to the right.

(6) Cross the road, then the car park, and take a farm track on the left (marked PR® Green), situated to the left of the Chemin du Clos. Pass the hamlet known as “les Paillers” and continue along the small road, ignoring the turnings on the right.

(7) Cross the D219 (watch out for fast-moving vehicles). Then pass under the railway line and turn right onto a track that runs under the D922 and leads to Hors.

(8) Cross the hamlet, keeping to the left then turning right towards Saint-Sauves-d’Auvergne, and continue to the end of the track.

(9) Turn left again, then right, and take Rue de la Banne d’Ordanche. Pass the cross. At the wash house, turn right, then left, and then right again. When you reach Rue Henri Pourrat, turn right before turning left again when you reach the school. Continue straight on to reach the village centre with its shops and church.

(10) Take the street on the right behind the church and walk past the large house with the six ‘chiens-assis’. Go straight on and follow the path down to the bottom of the valley to reach the Chemin de la Vergne.

(11) Take this path on the left to descend towards the Dordogne; cross the river via the road bridge, then, 100 metres further on, turn sharply left towards the Pont de St-Sauves.

(12) Do not take the bridge (view of the Dordogne) but turn right. After the campsite, turn left, cross the D922 with care and head up the path opposite. Ignore the grassy path on the left.

(13) At the road, in the hamlet of Chateauneuf, head left (view of Saint-Sauves and the granite hill just above, Croix de St-Roch), continue along the path towards Chibet/le Lac and, at the Fork in the road, take the left-hand path until you reach a T-junction.

(14) Turn right onto the path leading up through the woods. Take the first path on the left downhill and follow the forest track. The path climbs as it follows the Dordogne upstream. Cross a footbridge and walk along the left bank of the Dordogne. At the road, take the path opposite and continue along the Dordogne (viewpoint over the dam).

(15) Continue left onto the wide path running alongside the Dordogne, then head back up to the D129 road,

(16) Turn left, then cross the D129 and turn right towards ‘la Lauzeraie’ via Rue des Curadix. Then follow the Chemin de la Suchère and then the Avenue du Général Mangin in La Bourboule. At the stop sign, turn left onto Avenue Agis Ledru. At the end of this avenue, you’ll return to the starting point in front of the town hall (well worth a visit) and the tourist office (S/E).
