Description of the walk

Parking available at Col de la Schlucht.

Blue rectangle markings

(S/E) Departure behind the Chalet hotel-restaurant. Directional sign indicating the Sentier des Roches. Follow the road towards the pass.

(1) Turn right onto the Sentier des Roches, the only trail for about 3 km to Krappenfels (1,020 m altitude).

Blue triangle markings

(2) At the crossroads, descend to the left towards Frankenthal. Join the forest road and follow it downhill.

Yellow disc markings

(3) At the bend, take the alternative path on the right towards the Frankenthal inn at the foot of Petit Hohneck and Hohneck.

Red triangle markings

(4) Pass in front of the inn and continue towards the Dagobert cave.

(5) Turn right to reach the cave. Caution: slippery rocks, very uneven path. Once you have visited the cave, retrace your steps and return to the same signpost. Turn right towards Schaeferthal (1,200 metres above sea level) for a beautiful view.

Red rectangle markings

(6) Follow the path to the left towards the Schiessroth inn. Caution: long, uneven and very rocky descent.

(7) Take the turnstile on the side of the inn and descend the path, which has several hairpin bends as it is quite steep. This leads directly to Lake Schiessrothried (920 m altitude).

(8) Cross the dam to join the path with the same markings towards Lake Fischboedle. This path runs alongside the river.

(9) After crossing the dam at Lake Fischboedle, join the forest road and follow it for about 200 metres.

Blue Cross signpost

(10) On the right is a sign for "Sentier difficile" (difficult trail) leading up to Kerbholz. Take this trail.

(11) Pass to the right of the Kerbholz refuge and head towards Kastelbergwasen.

Yellow Cross Markings

(12) Once you reach the Kastelbergwasen inn, turn right towards Hohneck via the Sentier des Névés trail. This trail takes you up to the ridges and offers magnificent views of the entire route you have already covered.

Blue ring markings

(13) Once you reach the Col du Wormspel (1,277 metres above sea level), continue towards Hohneck.

Red Rectangle Markings

(14) Once you reach Hohneck (altitude 1,363 m), take the GR®5 towards Col de la Schlucht. The path is on the other side of the hotel-restaurant.

(15) At Col de Falimont, continue north, following the same markings. Once you reach the road, follow it to the right for a few dozen metres.

(16) Turn left.

(17) Continue left along the summer toboggan runs to the car park (S/E).

Great hike! The route is more than 20 km rather than 18, but it's really great!
Be careful, it's very rocky, walking sticks are almost essential.

Superb hike, very busy at the start and end but much less so in the middle.
Magnificent but very tough! We are well trained and we struggled 🤣. But it was worth it. Walking shoes are essential. Some very rocky and stony sections, where you have to climb on all fours.
However, we clocked up 22 km, not 18.

A very beautiful hike, a little longer than expected, with lots of different landscapes and magnificent views.
(Please note that the rock trail is open to the public from 1 May to 31 October).

A very beautiful hike with magnificent panoramic views. There is a little more elevation gain than expected.
You can stop for a toilet break at the Frankenthal inn (at the end of the rock trail).
Bring a light jacket as it can be very windy on the ridge on the way back.
The rock trail is the most technical part, very stony.

A word of advice: start the hike early to avoid getting stuck in traffic on the rocky trail, which is very busy.

A beautiful hike offering magnificent panoramic views.
It should be noted that this hike consists solely of rocks and stony paths, which can be hard on the knees.
Unfortunately, two signposting errors added an extra 4 km to our hike, bringing the total distance to 22.3 km.
I recommend this hike for experienced hikers. Remember to bring water as it is very physically demanding, but you will be dazzled by the views.

A route that we often took with my family a long time ago... at least 50 years ago. As children (there were four of us), we would run along this path like kids, probably quite recklessly, but without ever having an accident.
After seeing numerous articles about accidents on the rocky trail caused by reckless and/or ill-equipped "hikers", and with age catching up with me, I enjoyed revisiting this place in complete safety with your valuable advice.
... if only youth knew, if only old age could...
Thank you
