Circular loop of the 45th parallel in Périgord

A pleasant and rather varied hike that allows you to discover the landscapes of this part of the central Périgord and the valley where the Caudeau river has its source. There are a few sections of tarmac, but they are not very busy.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park behind the Town Hall of Veyrines de Vergt (Veirinas de Vern in Occitan, veirinas probably meaning "glassworks"). The starting point is in front of the Town Hall, where there is an information board about the walks.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, take the road on the right that passes in front of the war memorial, in front of the car park entrance. Continue along the path to the left of house no. 70. Further on, you will see a stone marker engraved with the number 45: this marks the 45th parallel, the exact midway point between the North Pole and the Equator. Then leave a carriage road on your right that climbs towards a house (a place called La Cavaille, la cavalha in Occitan: hollow, cave).

(1) At the junction with the end of a tarmac road, take the path that climbs to the left and, at the small road, turn right to reach the end of Chemin du Lavoir. Continue along the larger road on the right and you will soon reach a path on the left.

(2) Take this path and, at the strawberry fields, continue straight ahead (yellow marker in the distance).

(3) At the junction with the road (D42), turn left and continue with caution. After the right-hand bend, enter the forest and continue to Chemin de Tourtel on the right.

(4) Take this road, pass below a house and continue to the hamlet of Tourtel.

(5) At the first house, turn onto the path that branches off to the right. After a descent, you will reach a fork in the road.

(6) Turn sharply right (signs at the corner: direction "Circular du 45e parallèle") and continue to the bottom of the valley (Chemin des Marais). At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and, at house no. 3500 (locality known as Farguette, fargueta in Occitan, meaning small forge), the path becomes a small road which, a little further on, crosses the Caudeau river and arrives at a four-way fork.

(7) Leave the road towards Saint-Laurent-des-Bâtons and turn right towards the circular route of the 45th Parallel. After a straight stretch and a right-hand bend, the road crosses the Caudeau again.

(8) A few metres further on, take the path that climbs up opposite and leave the road on your left. After a climb, join the tarmac road and continue to the right until you find Chemin des Bois Dorés on your left, before the hamlet of Les Garissoux (garisson in Occitan: small oak tree).

(9) Turn onto this road (towards "Lodge des Tilleuls"). At the end of the road, continue on the path that descends straight ahead, joins a small valley, turns right, runs alongside a pond and climbs back up to a road.

(10) Follow it to the right (Chemin du Moulin de la Croix) and, in the hamlet of La Croix, at a low stone wall, take the path that branches off to the right. Shortly afterwards, rejoin the road and follow it to the right until you reach a multiple junction.

(11) Cross the junction carefully and take the small road that starts almost opposite, Chemin de la Guille. Leave the road that branches off to the right towards some buildings and continue along the path opposite. Pass close to a small pond and then, at the junction with a small road, continue straight ahead. Note again on the right the presence of a marker indicating the 45th parallel.

(12) At a house, leave the road that turns left and take the path opposite. Pass by a wash house, then head back up towards the village, walking alongside a pheasant farm. At the road, turn right towards the church and town hall (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Caudeau (lo caudau, in Occitan): a stream that rises near the (6) and flows into the Dordogne, nearly 39 km further on, at Bergerac, downstream from the dam. It was diverted into the Canal du Caudeau at Pombonne in the early 14th century to supply water to the population and half a dozen mills in the town of Bergerac. The canal itself is equipped with channels (lo reire-valat in Occitan: the rear ditch) protecting the town from flooding in the event of high water (see Histoire de Bergerac, published by Fanlac).
