Plazac Circular Route

Moving from sun to shade. The commune of Plazac, home to twenty-five nationalities, remains the land of the “croquants”, peasants from the South-West who rebelled in the 16th and 17th centuries. Nestled in the Périgord Noir, near the Barade Forest, it was also a centre of the Resistance. During your walks, you will come across or catch a glimpse of numerous paths and tracks known as “shortcuts” which, not so long ago, linked the farms together.

Description of the walk

From Montignac (Lascaux), Les Eyzies or Sarlat via the D706, once you reach Peyzac-le-Moustier, a few hundred metres from La Roque Saint-Christophe, take the D6. After 5.5 km, you’ll reach the entrance to Plazac and can park in the car park by the community hall.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, you’ll reach the tarmac road to Fleurac. Turn left, passing between a sawmill and the old Cordestieux mill, which has been restored as a residence. Cross the bridge over the Vimont to reach the junction with the Chemin des Chardonnies.

(1) Turn left, leaving the road for a flat track that follows the valley. Continue to the bridge.

(2) Pass a Bailey bridge on your left and continue along a gentle, ascending bend to the right. You will reach La Goulette. Please note: this signposted junction is the meeting point between the route to “Les Pléniers” and the return route from the “Le Moulin à vent” walk.

(3) Turn right and, after about a hundred metres, running alongside a meadow, reach the foot of the steepest but fairly short climb. Climb the rocky switchbacks through the woodland to the Chemin des Tranchats.

(4) Leave the Route des Bardonies on your right and continue left along the Chemin des Tranchats. Shortly afterwards, turn right, leaving the path to Les Tranchats, to follow the Chemin des Pléniers. The highest point is near. Continue to the yellow marker on the right at a four-way junction indicating a shortcut via Sorbeau.

(5) Continue straight on, then straight ahead again until you reach the junction with the Route du Moulin du Peuch.

(6) Turn right. At the junction with Route de Lissac, go straight ahead. Keep to the right a little further on and continue to the crossroads leading to the water tower.

(7) Turn right onto Chemin du Plateau, then veer right to join Route de Lissac. Keep left to reach a fork.

(8) Turn left and head down towards Tras le Four. Continue along the path through the woodland.

(9) Continue straight on, ignoring the turn-off to the right for Les Bernailloux. Keep left at the next junction and continue to the Route de Fleurac (end of the path). Turn right onto it until you reach the first grassy path on the left at the road leading to Roumegière.

(10) Take this path, then follow the bend in the track leading to a bridge, which you should not cross unless heading for the village centre.

(11) A few metres before the bridge, turn right towards the old wash house and rejoin Route de Fleurac. Turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(S/E) Plazac
(5) Short version: turn right via Sorbeau.
(5) If you turn right after 100 m, you’ll have a magnificent view of the village, but you’ll need to retrace your steps and leave the path you were following on your left.

A challenging hike at the start due to the steep climb. After that, it's completely flat, except for an easier descent at the end, which is partly paved.
