Walk between Dourdou and historic Camarès

Pleasant walk starting from the centre of Camarès (you can also start from the leisure centre car park) along the Dourdou river, passing through Camarès "Ville haute" (upper town), the ruins of the old fortified town, the castle currently being restored, the rose garden, and enjoy the panoramic view from the old bell tower.

Description of the walk

Parking at the Place du Foirail car park (post office).

(S/E) Head south along the Grand Rue (D902) and pass the Camarès town hall. When you reach the Place du Pont Neuf, turn left and take the bridge over the Dourdou. On the other side, turn left and you will immediately reach an intersection.

(1) Then turn right at a sharp angle. At the fork that appears immediately, keep right on Rue des Jardins. At the end of the tarmac road, continue along a path alongside the Dourdou river. Pass a camper van site, then a playground. Walk alongside a lake on your left. Join a small road and follow it to the right for about 150 metres.

(2) Just before a submersible bridge, turn left, go through a chain blocking access to vehicles and follow a path. Climb up, alternating between shaded and open sections, ignoring the paths on the left.

(3) At the T-junction, follow Chemin des Vignes to the left. Further on, rejoin the tarmac road and leave the pretty Fontaine du Theron fountain on your left. After a few dozen metres, take a path on the right to reach the entrance gate to the old town, at the foot of the Clocher de la Vierge bell tower.

(4) Turn left and cross Rue de la Serre on your right. At the next intersection, turn left onto Rue de la Serre. Then take a sharp left onto Rue du Jeu de Ballon and immediately turn right onto Chemin de l'Église. This will take you to Saint-Michel Church.

(5) Leave the church car park on your right, cross the D10 and follow the Voie Romaine on your left. Further on, turn right onto the Pont Vieux and cross the Dourdou again. On the other side, turn right and ignore the alleys and dead ends on your left.

(6) At a fork in the road near a restaurant, turn right onto Rue du Grabas and continue straight ahead. Further on, the tarmac gives way to a path along the Dourdou. You will arrive at a stone house called La Noria.

(7) Turn left and continue straight ahead until you reach Rue du Barry. Follow this street to the left. At a large building called "Le Temple", turn right onto Rue de la République. At the end, turn left and you will immediately come to Place du Foirail (S/E).
