Loop from Les Rimets via the Pas de l'Âne

Hike starting and ending at Les Rimets, located in the hills above Rencurel. The hike is almost entirely in the woods. The loop passes by the old Serre du Sâtre refuge (which was burned down in 2022 and has not been restored) and offers a view of the Pas de l'Âne.
The return route follows small paths that are not marked with the usual FFRandonnée colours, but are easy to find and very passable.

Description of the walk

Parking at Les Rimet along the small road.

(S/E) From the hamlet, go up the road for a few hundred metres until you reach a left-hand bend a few dozen metres from a farm. A path branches off to the left.

(1) Take the GR® trail on the left of the road towards Les Rieux, Les Ailes. You will arrive at a crossroads near a shelter.

(2) Continue straight ahead, heading south, and join a small road in the hamlet of Les Rieux.

(3) Cross the hamlet and continue along the path, keeping in the same direction until you reach another small road near the hamlet of Les Ailes. Turn right and continue for about 250 m until you reach a bend in the road on the left near the "Chargeaoir".

(4) In the bend, leave the small road and take the path opposite, which heads north after a long right-hand bend. Climb for about 2 km to reach the former Refuge du Serre du Sâtre at a crossroads.

(5) The refuge was destroyed by fire in 2022. Turn right towards Les Croisettes heading north. About 200 m from the Les Croisettes car park, do not go down towards the car park (on the left) but continue straight ahead towards the forest road.

(6) Continue right on the forest road until you reach a three-way junction.

(7) Turn right towards Col de Mont Noir and, after about 400 m, take the discovery trail on the left of the road and continue on this trail until you reach the start of a path on the left towards Les Roches Plates.

(8) Follow this path for about 500 m to reach the Pas de l'Âne viewpoint.

(9) Enjoy the view of the valley. Turn around to rejoin the discovery trail.

(8) Continue straight ahead for about 50 metres and, at the crossroads, take a small path that descends towards Rencurel. Please note that this path is a forest track with only red markings. The path then crosses the Route Forestière du Mont Noir.

(10) Keep going in the same direction and follow the forest road until you reach a fork after a right-hand bend. Then continue to the right of the road on a forest track to continue the descent. You will rejoin the yellow and green marked trail after about 600 m. Follow this trail, which eventually returns to the road that leads to the junction you came to on the way there.

(1) Follow the same route back to the hamlet of Les Rimets (S/E).
