Circular of Valmasque and Fontanalbe

This magnificent circular takes you through the Valmasque and Fontanalbe valleys, with no fewer than five lakes and picture-postcard landscapes. It is a long but gradual hike with very few difficult sections.

Description of the walk

Cross Casterino via a small track. You will come across marker 395 (marking the path up to the Fontanalbe valley, which you will take on the way back) and continue a few metres further on to a small car park and marker 394.

(S/E) From there, follow the direction of Valmasque along the stream of the same name. The stone track is very easy to follow and the entire route is generally well marked/signposted. Reach marker 393.

(1) Continue left towards the Valmasque Refuge.
note: the path on the right goes up to Lac de l'Agnel, but the sign has been torn down. See the note in the section "During the hike."
Walk along the Vastière de Valmasque, continue on the track, leaving the bridge below, until you reach marker 374.

(2) Take the path on the left at the marker, still heading towards the refuge. You will cross the Vastière des Dragons, where the Valmasque stream winds its way through the heart of the valley.

(3) You can take a short detour to see a beautiful waterfall. It is visible from the path, so it's hard to miss. A second waterfall is located a little further up as you head back towards the refuge. Reach the trail junction at marker 98.

(4) Turn right towards the Valmasque refuge, which you will quickly reach at the edge of Lac Vert.

(5) Enjoy the view before returning to the previous crossroads.

(4) Turn right, pass marker 97, and continue along Lac Vert.

(6) Continue towards Lac Noir.

(7) Reach the northern tip of Lac du Basto.

(8) Climb the few zigzags to go around the lake to the east until you reach marker 96.

(9) Leave the Vallée des Merveilles path opposite and turn left towards Baisse de Fontanalbe. This is the most difficult part of the entire hike, even though it is not particularly complicated. The path is not very well marked on the ground, but there are numerous yellow and green markings along the route, making it easy to follow. Continue to marker 397.

(10) Enjoy the truly unique landscape here, with countless rocks ranging from blue to purple.
Then follow the direction of Lac Vert de Fontanalbe and continue on to the crossroads at marker 396.

(11) Continue straight ahead on a slight descent to reach marker 386 just above the lake.

(12) Leave the path leading up to Baisse de Valauretta and La Minère on your right and continue towards the Fontanalbe Refuge. You will soon reach the crossroads at marker 387.

(13) Turn left here to reach the banks of the beautiful Lac Vert de Fontanalbe.

(14) Retrace your steps to the previous crossroads.

(13) Turn left onto the path leading to the Fontanalbe Refuge, which you will reach after marker 389.

(15) Continue descending northwards towards Casterino. You will reach marker 390.

(16) Here, turn left towards Casterino and Lac des Grenouilles.
Note: the path on the right also descends to Casterino but arrives downstream from the hamlet at the tree-climbing site.
Continue north then north-east to reach the junction of a circular at marker 392.

(17) Turn left to reach Lac des Grenouilles.

(18) Return to the previous junction by making a circular movement to the left.

(17) Turn left again onto thePR®, continue down a gentle slope, find marker 395 and, a few steps further on, the car park at marker 394, the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Good shoes are recommended for the ascent and descent of the Baisse de Fontanalbe. The rest of the hike is really not very complicated, the total distance being the only reason to classify this hike as "difficult".
Water is available at the Valmasque and Fontanalbe refuges. There are also numerous small streams where you can drink. The water is not known to be drinkable, but I drank from them several times without any problems.
(13) A sign here indicates that due to recent rockfalls, it is advisable to take the footpath through the archaeological site to avoid falling rocks. However, the track remains perfectly passable.

I completed the entire circular in 5 hours of actual walking time.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

(1) At this crossroads, here is another idea for a hike, as you can also climb up to the lake and then descend to Valmasque via the small pass of the Charnassère.

(6) Lac Vert
(7) Lac Noir
(8) Lac du Basto
(10) Baisse de Fontanalbe

A very varied route, not particularly difficult apart from its length... with chamois and a marmot to spot!

A very beautiful hike through varied landscapes with chamois and ibex. I recommend climbing to the summit of Bicknell from Fontanable because the view of the lakes is fantastic and you will discover a fourth lake that is also very pretty.

Done in reverse: departure from Castérino marker 395, overnight stay at the Fontanalbe refuge, then the next day return trip via the Sacred Way, the Twin Lakes, the Green Lake of Fontanalbe, Basto Lake, Black Lake and Green Lake, lunch at the Valmasque refuge, then return to marker 395.
A very beautiful hike with varied landscapes. We saw lots of chamois and marmots. The short circular route via the Sacred Way allows you to discover many engravings.
The Fontanalbe refuge is very welcoming and well organised (thanks to the super friendly team), with excellent dinner and breakfast. It was full, but despite that, it didn't feel too crowded.
Quick lunch at the Valmasque refuge (very good omelette!), magnificent view and friendly staff.

Hello everyone,
You don't need to be an experienced mountaineer to do this magnificent circular; any good hiker can give it a go. There are no technical difficulties, and the signposting and description should be sufficient, but don't set off without a map!
PLEASE NOTE: Change to route 13. Access to the Fontanalba refuge is prohibited via the track suggested by the author. Cross the bridge and follow the track up to a hut. From there, the path is signposted. Take the Joseph Vighetto trail on the right, which will lead you to the foot of the refuge. Please note that due to poor signposting at the start of the detour, hikers still take the prohibited route.
Another point to note: I spoke with a ranger who said that walking sticks MUST have tips in the protected area of the Vallée des Merveilles, with a fine of €68 for non-compliance.
Don't hesitate to take this hike. You will encounter ibex that are not at all wild; you can pass within 2 metres of them without them moving, as well as marmots, which are more difficult to photograph.
Thank you for this trail.
Enjoy your walk, everyone.
Best regards
Didier

Magnificent circular!
No difficulty in getting back up. The GPX track and information are sufficient.
A bit crowded until you reach the Valmasque refuge, but otherwise it's fairly quiet.

It's long, but it's so good! The variety of landscapes is simply incredible. The only difficulty is physical, especially the climb from Lake Basto to Fontanalbe, but it's nothing insurmountable. It's a feast for the eyes!

Thank you, Jubulbe, for this magnificent hike!

The rocky section after the Fontanalbe descent offers incredible scenery!

At Fontanalbe, some hikers advised us to make a round trip (70 m elevation gain and about 30 minutes extra) to the summit of Bicknell. It was good advice because you can see the three lakes of Valmasque as well as two other smaller ones that have no name. It's an ideal place for a picnic with a panoramic view.

did this hike in the opposite direction, duration 7 hours (without visiting the site)
the climb between Fontanalbe and the pass of the same name is absolutely splendid and varied, under Mount Bégo via an old military track. The descent to the lakes is a little steep but not difficult. The return via the track seems a little long but the landscape is so beautiful!

We did the route in reverse with five children (aged 6 to 15), staying two nights in mountain huts (Fontanalbe and Valmasque) and visiting the Fontanalbe site. Easy and very suitable.
