Description of the walk

Park in front of Mensignac Town Hall, near the church. The sign marking the start of the walk is opposite the church.

(S/E) Cross the D710 at the pedestrian crossing below the church, then first turn right then left to take the narrow lane, Chemin des Glycines. When this turns right at No. 7, continue straight on along a path (yellow markings) until you reach a road.

(1) Follow it to the left until the end of Route des Combaraux at Le Moulin à Vent.

(2) At the stop sign, turn left then cross Route de Gravelle to the right. Take Allée des Noisetiers opposite (bins on the corner) and, at the end of the tarmac, continue along a path (yellow marker).

(3) Just before reaching a road, take the path on the right that runs alongside a hedge of thuja trees (yellow marker).

(4) After a climb, take the path branching off to the left just after a tree. You’ll reach a high point (altitude 215m, beautiful almost 360° view). Continue south-east and pass under a high-voltage power line. After passing between two thuja trees, you’ll come to a crossroads with signposts.

(5) Turn left and at the next three-way junction, continue straight ahead. At the three-way junction, veer left and pass close to a pidgeon hunting hut. Return to the tarmac at a place called La Haute Gardie.

(6) Continue straight ahead, heading south-east, and pass close to a pond. At the entrance to a small wood, ignore a path leading down to the right and continue straight ahead. The path curves to the right and descends into the wood. Further on, it is lined with walnut trees and leads out onto a small road (house on the corner)

(7) Follow it to the right. Shortly afterwards, pass the turn-off to La Basse Gardie on your right and continue straight ahead on the Route de Lauvady. After the house, the road gives way to a path that descends.

(8) At the bottom, turn sharply left and follow the circular Boucle des Vergers due east, along with the GR®361 and GR®646 (red and white markings). Head towards the hamlet of La Font de l’Auche.

(9) At the first bend, at No. 36, leave the road to your right and take the path opposite (GR® markings). You will soon reach a crossroads; continue straight ahead onto the Route de Chez Charron (signposted circular route). Pass the hamlet of Chez Charron and reach an isolated house.

(10) Turn left towards Les Chabannes along the Sentier circular route (leaving the GR® trail). Shortly afterwards, turn left onto the main path and walk alongside a wood on your right.

(11) At the end of Allée de la Bergerie, follow the road to the right and cross the hamlet of Les Chabannes.

(12) On leaving the hamlet, when the road turns left, take the path on the right which runs alongside barbed wire (yellow marker). Pass under a high-voltage power line. Join a limestone track and follow it to the left. Pass the hamlet of Les Marrots on your left and arrive at the hamlet of Les Chalards.

(13) Opposite No. 275, continue right onto the small road which soon gives way to a track. Descend into the forest in the hollow of a small valley.

(14) Join a wider path and follow it to the right. Make a long, steady climb and arrive at a crossroads.

(15) Continue roughly straight ahead on a limestone track (yellow signpost). Walk for a long time heading west-north-west.

(16) Leave the track and take a dirt path to the left (yellow marker). Reach a housing estate, go round it on the left and continue along a path through the woods.

(17) Reach the road and follow it to the right. Pass two football pitches and, at the Fork in the road, keep left. Reach the Route de Périgueux (D710) and follow it to the left for about fifty metres.

(18) Turn left onto Rue des Épis and, at the roundabout, continue straight ahead.

(19) At the T-junction shortly afterwards, follow the road to the right. At the end, first turn right then left to go past the church on your right and return to the car park (S/E).

A brilliant hike
Plenty of views – fields, meadows, orchards, woodland – my encounters with ducks, rabbits and deer
The route presents no difficulty
Please note: between points 16 and 17, the dirt track is muddy and rutted by wild boars following heavy rain
Make sure you wear sturdy shoes
Much of the route is exposed, so avoid the hottest part of the day
At this time of year there aren’t many walkers, yet it seems to me that it must be a popular route

A very pleasant, easy hike on good paths, meeting friendly farmers and enjoying very pleasant, varied landscapes through orchards, walnut groves and various crops. The second part is more wooded.
