The starting point is in Saint-Izan-de-Médoc at the car park behind the church.
The route
(S/E) Stage 1. Château de Loudenne. (3.4 km). From the car park at Saint-Izan church, go around the church to take the D2. Then turn left onto Rue de Couleys. Keep to the right until you reach the crossroads.
(1) After 1.6 km, turn right towards Château Loudenne (Route de Taillanet).
As you approach the château, you will notice small towers lining the estate. After 1 km, take the road that passes in front of the château gate.
(2) Continue to the river, passing between the charterhouse (on your left) and the wine cellars (on your right) to the château's private port.
(3) Stage 2. Château Fort de Castillon. (4.4 km). From the port of Château Loudenne, take the path that follows the river for about 2.4 km to the port of Saint-Izans-de-Médoc.
(4) Cross the bridge at the port and turn right onto the path that runs alongside the river. For 2 km, the path winds its way along the banks of the Gironde with its typical carrelets (fishermen's huts on stilts). The path offers beautiful shaded areas that are ideal for stopping to rest and have a drink.
(5) At the end of the path, you will arrive at the Château Tour de Castillon wine estate and the ruins of the ancient fortress of Castillon, the only point of embarkation for wine from the Médoc to England in the Middle Ages. This section allows you to discover the endemic flora of the Médoc.
Stage 3. Saint Christoly-Médoc. (2.5 km). At the first intersection, take the path that leads to the port of Saint-Chrystoly-Médoc, which you will reach after 1.2 km.
(6) At the edge of the port, you will find a fully restored old commercial building and the much-loved customs officer's restaurant. At the port, turn left towards the centre of Saint-Christoly-Médoc. You will pass a monumental façade flanked by two towers, then turn left (Rue du 19 mars 1962). You will arrive in front of the wash house. The road runs parallel to the one you took from Château de la Tour Castillon. You will see beautiful outcrops of sedimentary limestone rich in fossils.
Stage 4. (4.5 km) Saint-Izans-de-Médoc.
(7) At the end of Rue du 18 mars 1962, turn right towards Le Sablonat. At the first three-way junction, keep left and then turn left at the next intersection. After 1.4 km, take the path on the left for 100 metres.
(8) Head into the open field on the right along the vineyards, keeping the Saint-Izans water tower in sight.
(9) You will arrive on the D2 at Château Sigognac. There are three options:
- follow the D2,
- cross Château de Sigognac,
- or head out into the open field.
We recommend the latter option, which requires you to cross the ditch via a makeshift bridge (wooden plank). Continue along the D2.
(10) You will pass the 19th-century column dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Saint-Izans before reaching the church and car park (S/E).
