The Massardière circular in Saint-Just-Malmont

A lovely, relatively easy walk starting from the hamlet of Les Gouttes, in Saint-Just-Malmont. A hilly route alternating between open landscapes and forest sections, at an altitude of around 900 metres.

Description of the walk

Park your car at the edge of a track leading from the hamlet of Les Gouttes; the track is passable beyond the cul-de-sac leading to a few houses. Take care not to obstruct traffic.

(S/E) Head towards the forest and take the uphill path on the left that leads into it. Be careful not to take the path on the right shown on the map, which disappears a little further on due to logging on this plot.

(1) At the junction, turn right and follow the path until you reach the road and the signposted path at a place called Talatay. Continue to the left until you reach the junction.

(2) Cross the road carefully to take the path opposite. Cross the stream and take the path uphill on the left. At the top of this short climb, turn right and continue straight on to the D12, ignoring the path on the right which also leads there.

(3) Cross the D12 with care and take the path slightly to the right opposite, which descends to the next road. Turn left until you rejoin the D12 and follow it to the right for about a hundred metres.

(4) Take the path on the left and continue until you reach the D10, which you follow to the right for about a hundred metres.

(5) Take the path on the left which crosses fields, then heads down into the forest and eventually comes out onto a wider path.

(6) Turn right, cross the stream, then immediately take the path on the left which climbs gently towards the hamlet of La Massardière.

(7) In the hamlet, follow the road down to the left and continue straight on. Once at the four-way junction at Le Bouchet, at elevation 837, head straight ahead and let a double-track path branch off to the left.

(8) A good hundred metres further on, leave the marked path, which continues straight ahead, and take the path on the left that climbs through the forest and leads back to the starting junction.

(1) Then turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

A route with sufficient mobile coverage to track the hike using GPS.
Lots of extremely muddy paths (watch out for slipping).
A path with plenty of brambles and wild grass, but with walking sticks, you can make your way through.

An easy but very varied walk through plateaus and woods with magnificent trees. I did this walk in fine weather and again a week later in the fog.
I’d happily do it a third time. Not much elevation gain.

Taken on 6 November on an autumn day with a temperature of 11°C. Based on the GPX track
The woodland remains pleasant as it is sheltered from the wind and fairly light. There are small sections of tarmac, but they are very short and rarely used by vehicles. A short walk in fairly flat countryside (100m elevation gain) that can be done quickly, just to get some fresh air.
At the point N45° 19.999' E4° 21.291', we joined the road and took a slight detour, forgetting to cut straight across, but nothing too serious – just an extra 50m
Thanks for the track!

A short, very pleasant walk. You can extend the route via La Cotête and La Chaize to reach Les Gouttes.
