Tour of the Cotatay dam lake

This is an easy walk on the outskirts of Saint-Étienne, with a few short sections of steep inclines or slopes.
Located at the entrance to Pilat Park, the Cotatay dam is one of the dams that supplies water to the towns in the valley.
A pleasant, shaded walk that is refreshing in summer (but swimming is prohibited).

Description of the walk

To reach the starting point, leave Saint-Étienne via the south-west, pass through La Ricamarie, then head towards Saint-Genest Malifaux. After a few hairpin bends, you will see the dam below on the right. There is a small space at the side of the road where you can park two cars, in a right-hand bend, just at the starting point of the walk.

(S/E) Take the small road down to the dam to the "guard" house (road closed to cars, except for residents).

(1) Cross the dam and turn left. Then walk along the entire length of the reservoir to the first small river that feeds into the lake.

(2) Cross the river and climb up the opposite bank (steep climb for about ten metres), then follow the path to the left.
Cross two more small rivers to reach the other side of the lake, which is sunnier (south/south-west facing).
At the dam, take the arrival road on the right back to the car park (S/E).

A pleasant and very easy route.
Please note that there is limited parking space upstream of the dam.

A short hike that seems easy at first glance, but beware of the return climb back to the car park! It's very steep!!!
Otherwise, it's impossible to get lost on the trail, as there is only one. Lovely views, very peaceful.
It's best to have good shoes to cross the Cotatay (which was still high in August) and the few escarpments at the end of the route.
Dogs are allowed on a leash.
We didn't meet anyone, it was quiet and relaxing.

Lovely route along the water's edge. Beautiful scenery. Slightly steep climb back to the vehicle. Wear suitable footwear for crossing the small streams.

A lovely little route, just a stone's throw from the town, but ultimately little known. Very few parking options nearby. You have to drive a good kilometre further down the road, which adds a little to the walk, but it's not unpleasant. The route is mostly in the forest with almost constant views of the lake and is easy going, with a few small inclines. It's best to take a walking stick as there is a risk of slipping or twisting your ankle. It's fairly quiet as it's isolated.

Add a note that dogs must be kept on a lead.
