Circular walk around Saint-Pierre Chapel in Vouvray and the ponds

Walk starting from the car park at Douy church to explore Courgain Mill, situated at the bridge over the Loir. The route then passes near a castle at La Boulidière, descends along the road between the ponds and then follows a path towards the Vouvray footbridge to the old wash house and Saint-Pierre Chapel. The return journey follows the same route for part of the way, then veers off to skirt the ponds of the Basse Plaine, where you can spot coots and grey herons. The end of the walk leads to another bridge over the Loir, then past the Château du Prieuré before returning to Douy church.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Douay Church.

(S/E) Return to the road and head left. At the junction with Rue Passerelle Saint-Sauveur, continue straight on along Rue de la Vallée until the bend.

(1) Turn right at the small car park towards Moulin de Courgain, passing close to the football pitch. At the junction, continue straight on, leaving the turn-off to Ancise and its castle on your right, and follow the Loir river to Moulin de Courgain.

(2) After the mill, near the ford, turn left and continue to the junction just after the bend.

(3) Take Rue des Pâtis on the right, running alongside the Boulidière estate, and head towards the crossroads.

(4) Head left onto Rue de Fontaine Marie and after 100 m, at the fork, keep left. Continue in the same direction to reach Jargué and the RD111.4, which is called Rue de la Vallée here.

(5) Turn left and head down the D111.4 to the junction with Rue des Pâtis.

(7) Turn right and follow the first ponds.

(8) Ignore the path on your left (which you’ll take on the way back) and carry straight on. Pass between two more ponds.

(9) Continue straight on to cross the footbridge at the Vouvray ford, which spans several branches of the Loir; pass the Moulin de Vouvray on your right and head for the junction located about sixty metres from the Chapelle Saint-Pierre.

(10) Turn left towards the Fontaine Doudée: you can see the old wash house after climbing the path along the edge of the Fontaine Doudée estate. Continue to the junction in Chatay,

(11) Take the only road on the right to the Chapelle Saint-Pierre and return to the junction you passed earlier.

(10) Turn left back onto the path you took on the way there and follow it to the Basse Plaine junction.

(8) Turn right and walk between the ponds.

(12)At the end, take the dirt track on the left to pass between the ponds and a hedge, continuing on to the road (Rue de la Vallée): you may spot coots and grey herons on this section of the route.

(13) Turn right, cross the Loir bridge and head to the small car park.

(14) Turn right and cross a branch of the Loir, leaving the Château du Prieuré on your right. Cross the footbridge and continue along Rue Passerelle du Saint-Sauveur.

(15) Turn right onto a small lane leading directly to the church car park (S/E).
