Worth a visit

The town of Châteaudun stands out for the beauty of its setting, atop a rocky promontory overlooking the Loir, and the grandeur of its château. The town, home to 58 listed or classified sites and monuments, can be explored via a pleasant route through the historic quarter.

Châteaudun Castle is the “first castle of the Loire” for visitors coming from Paris. This former fortified castle, now a grand princely residence, overlooks the River Loir from the north-western tip of the rocky outcrop on which the town is built. Here you can admire architectural features in a variety of styles, ranging from the feudal era through to the Renaissance, via Gothic architecture.

Discover an unexpected underground world by taking a guided tour of the Grottes du Foulon, a geological site covering over a hectare beneath the town. Follow the guide through the vast natural caverns carved out by water 65 million years ago. The underground tour offers the chance to admire a remarkable concentration of quartz geodes and bluish chalcedony.

As for nature, the town is the starting point for numerous walking, cycling, mountain biking, canoeing and horse riding routes. Fishing spots are also available in Châteaudun and the surrounding area.

We went on this walk on 9 June. (A group of nine people) It was a lovely, varied walk (the gardens along the River Loir, the church of Saint Jean, the countryside and the village of Saint Denis les Ponts) with some lovely views, particularly of Châteaudun Castle. We rounded it off with a short tour of the town’s old quarters.
The whole group was delighted.

A pleasant and fairly varied walk (woodland, streets, fields). Not very difficult as there isn’t much of an elevation gain. My only minor criticism concerns point 14 and the fairly busy road: cars drive quite fast and there isn’t much space to walk at the side.

An excellent walk combining woodland, fields, very few roads, streams and crossings of the River Loir.
The route is fully marked in yellow, with clear, easily visible markings.
Note the lovely circular path starting from point 13 and following the GR35: an absolutely magnificent path through the woods.
Be careful, however, at point 8, which isn’t obvious: you don’t go all the way to Villarmoy, but turn left onto a path that’s hard to see through the tall grass: a Yellow Cross blocks the path that goes straight ahead.
Thanks again to the Châteaudun Tourist Office for this truly remarkable walk!
