Infernet Circular Loop

On the border between Dévoluy (Hautes-Alpes) and Isère, a lovely circular route along the Souloise where you’ll discover the Gillardes resurgences, look out over the Défilé de l’Infernet and cross a footbridge...

Description of the walk

To get to the start: Coming from Le Dévoluy, just after the Pont de la Baume, turn right onto the D217 towards Monestier-d’Ambel. The Gillardes car park is located about 1,500 m further on, on the right

(S/E) From the car park, after crossing the road, head west to join a path marked in yellow and follow it towards Les Gillardes. The marked path heads north and climbs above the resurgences.

(1) Ignore the footbridge over the Souloise and climb a few hairpin bends, keeping to the left bank. Shortly after a hairpin bend on the right, you’ll reach a fork in the path: take the right-hand branch which goes straight on... When the path joins a wide track, follow it north-eastwards.

(2) At a hairpin bend to the right, leave the track and take a path on the left. Further on, cross the track you left and head towards the canyon, which you reach via a few steps.

(3) Retrace your steps, head down to the left to reach the footbridge and cross the Souloise. Follow the path which now climbs gently along the right bank. There are several spots by the water ideal for a picnic or a dip... Follow the stream upstream along the water’s edge. After passing Les Petites Gillardes (often dry, especially in summer), continue along the path for as long as possible until you reach the D217 road. Follow this road to the right, cross the bridge over the Souloise and return to the car park (S/E).

Visorando map not detailed enough... I forgot my IGN map...
What's more, on the ground, there were multiple markings for the same route and conflicting directions with crossed-out signs... which hadn't been replaced..
numerous paths that criss-cross and are all poorly maintained.
So, as the Visorando directions were not very clear and the map was very poor, it was a nightmare!!!

A lovely spot, perfect for a cool summer stroll. Children love this circular walk where they can dip their feet in the water. There are plenty of places to stop for a break.

A lovely, refreshing circular walk, mostly in the shade of a beautiful forest. Easy parking. Suitable for everyone, though be aware of one or two short but steep sections, which may prove challenging for older people or those who find walking difficult... As for swimming: you’d better not be the type to feel the cold!
