Cornil–Poumeyrol circular loop

A route that is mostly through woodland, quite long and with significant elevation changes, but which has the advantage of taking very few tarmac roads. It allows you to see Cornil Church, follow the River Corrèze and see the climbing site as well as the village of Poumeyrol.

Description of the walk

Park in the square in front of Cornil Town Hall.

(S/E) With your back to the Post Office, head left up towards Cornil Church via Rue du Barry and then Rue de l’Église.

(1) Go straight on, past the cemetery, to join the path leading down to the banks of the Corrèze. Follow the river downstream to the D1089 bridge at the tunnel.

(2) Turn right to cross the bridge with care due to traffic, and change banks. Then, at the end of the bridge, take the tarmac road on the right which leads to the climbing site.

(3) Immediately afterwards, take the path that climbs to the left. Join the D1, follow it to the left for a few metres, then turn right onto a track. Follow this track, turning left at the first junction to rejoin the D1 at Bouchaillou, at the entrance to the hamlet of Poumeyrol.

(4) Follow the D1 to the left, descending for 700 m before you come to a track on the right; be careful as this is not very visible as it is lined with large boulders, and make sure you take the track furthest to the right.

(5) Leave the D1 and take this track which descends to the right with a few hairpin bends. Do not turn right at the first junction, but at the next one 400 m further down. Then, head down to the bridge over the Corrèze at Bonnel, avoiding the first track on the left at the bottom which leads to Bonnel, and take the next one instead to avoid a stretch of tarmac.

(6) Cross the bridge and immediately turn left onto a path that climbs and takes you over the D1089 above the tunnel.

(7) You’ll immediately come to a crossroads with several paths branching off. Don’t go down to the right, but take the one going up to the left (not shown on the map). You’ll reach a junction after about 1.5 km of climbing.

(8) Take a small path on the left which descends, appearing to go back the way you came, before following the contour lines to emerge, after crossing a small seasonal stream at the bottom of the valley. Then climb slightly up a track which descends further on towards the Bois de Leix.

(9) Cross the hamlet to the left, first along a tarmac road, then a dirt track, before taking a path that descends to the right (this is not very visible; the landmark is that this path on the right is marked by wooden barriers). Further down, cross the track and continue straight ahead to reach the Ruisseau de la Brauze, almost at the Corrèze.

(10) Cross the stream via a wooden bridge, then follow the railway line and head up to the right towards the sewage treatment plant and the arboretum.

(11) Head up to the left through a north-east-facing valley to reach the village of Cornil, ignoring the paths through the arboretum. Once at the top, turn left to return to the town hall square (S/E).

Not for beginners! A very varied route with some steep sections, but it’s well worth it!
A GPS with the route is almost essential to guide you on certain sections.
- Lovely view of the waterfall on the Brauze stream
- Lovely view of the hills above Cornil in the hamlet of Bois de Leix

We found this route quite challenging. We won’t be attempting the ones marked ‘difficult’ The elevation gain is quite significant. It involves a fair bit of scrambling through the woods. You’ll build up your muscles and stay in the shade. Not for those looking for scenic views.
We therefore recommend this walk to keen walkers rather than sightseers.
It’s best to use a GPS app, and even better with IGN maps, as you’ll come across numerous paths.

A lovely route, consisting almost entirely of paths through woodland. However, the sheer number of paths means it’s easy to get lost.

Thank you for sharing this; without the GPS we would have got lost several times!! We would also like to suggest the following additions to the route description
For point 2): follow the river to the bridge, then take the wooden steps to join the D1089. Walk along the bridge, turning left, then cross it to take the tarmac road on the right leading to the climbing site.
For point 4): follow the D1 to the left for 700 m, take the track on the right – be careful as it’s not very obvious as it’s lined with large boulders – and make sure you take the track furthest to the right.
For 9), cross the hamlet... then take a path that descends to the right; this is not very visible, but the landmark is that this path on the right has wooden barriers.
Here are a few additional details I’d like to share.
In any case, thank you for this walk, as it’s very pleasant through the woods and a lovely reward awaits us with a superb waterfall at the end of the route.
