Description of the walk

In the village of Vouglans, take the forest road that climbs towards Plage des Plans and park in the car park next to the barrier that reserves road access to authorised users.

(S/E) Go through the barrier and continue along the road towards Plage des Plans (GR® "Tour du Lac de Vouglans", with classic red and white markings and yellow markings.

(1) At Bois sous Faucon, make a round trip to Plage des Plans, which offers a view of the final section of the Vouglans Dam reservoir.

(2) Retrace your steps to Bois sous Faucon.

(1) Take the path that climbs to the left, towards the place called La Grange des Plans.

(3) Stay on theGR® trail, taking the path on the left, and head towards La Grange des Plans.

(4) Turn left onto the path towards Moirans-en-Montagne until you reach Les Cornes de Dolan.

(5) Leave theGR® trail by taking a path on the left towards the Champs Palards viewpoint.

(6) Turn left at a hairpin bend, where the markings are not very visible, and you will reach a magnificent viewpoint overlooking Plage des Plans, the Vouglans Dam and a horseshoe-shaped bend in the Ain River.

(7) Continue north on the path that is circular and loops south and arrives at a fork.

(8) Continue along a path on the left, which turns into a forest track heading north-east, then due north towards a fork.

(9) Leave the forest track and take a path on the left towards the Belvédère des Champs Palards viewpoint. This viewpoint over the southern part of Lake Vouglans has a small picnic area.

(10) Turn right and follow the forest track that leads to a forest road.

(11) Follow this Pré du Puits forest road towards the Belvédère du Bief Desous viewpoint (GR® and yellow markings). It leaves theGR®9by turning right to reach another fork.

(12) At the place called Sur Faucon, leave theGR® and continue straight ahead towards the viewpoint. When the forest road joins the D299, at a picnic area, take a path that climbs for about 20 metres to the viewpoint. Then follow the D299 for about 100 metres.

(14) Turn right onto an unmarked path that descends to the first junction with a forest track.

(15) Continue straight downhill along a path that is not very well marked for the first 50 metres, to the left of the stream flowing from the spring, until you reach the path that leads to the village of Lect.

(16) Turn left and follow the path until you reach the D299, at the entrance to the village of Lect (yellow markings).

(17) Turn right and cross the village along the road (no pavement).

(18) At the end of the village, turn right and take a street that quickly turns into a path leading down to the Route du Belvédère.

(19) Turn right and take this road which leads to the Belvédère du Barrage de Vouglans, a round trip (permanent and very interesting exhibition on the construction of the dam).

(20) Retrace your steps to the fork.

(19) Leave the road and take a path downhill to the right, towards the village of Vouglans (walking sticks recommended in wet weather). Continue to the first houses.

(21) Turn right to reach the Route des Plans and the car park (S/E).

I did this circular walk starting from Lect in the direction indicated (car park near the cemetery). Apart from two sections on slightly monotonous forest paths, this walk takes place on charming little trails and offers superb views. At the end, I added the climb to the Lect viewpoint via the Notre-Dame de la Roche cave (a total of about 5 hours' walking). A really lovely outing! Many thanks to the author!

A magnificent hike in unspoilt natural surroundings, overlooking Lake Vouglans.
We encountered some difficulties with the signposting between points 9 and 10. Some young people coming in the opposite direction had also lost their way. After point 9, when descending the slightly steep rocks, simply continue straight ahead and walk along the foot of the cliff.
The return journey is sunnier and less spectacular, but still very pleasant.

The walk is very varied. However, if I were to do it again, I would choose to follow it in the opposite direction. This allows you to save the most spectacular viewpoint for last. Thank you for publishing the route.

There are some excellent aspects to this walk, but also some less good ones.

First of all, after a nice long climb, I think you can skip the beach at point 2. The view is nice, but it's not the best on the route, and the return climb is steep. Finally, the last big part of the hike isn't the most pleasant either (once we reached the road, we decided to shorten the hike to stay in the forest and return to the beach. It's a shame that swimming is prohibited there...).

On the other hand, the Champs Palards viewpoint is stunning. It takes you by surprise as you wander through the pretty, somewhat wild forest. The view of the Fer à Cheval is incredible. This rock, which seems to be suspended in mid-air, is magical. The vertigo-inducing effect is striking. We stood there for almost 30 minutes, mesmerised by the spectacle.

Be careful, as the lack of protection makes the place really dizzying.

Be warned again: we walked this route the day after a strong windstorm, and many trees were literally lying on the ground, sometimes blocking the path to the point where we had to squeeze between the trunks.

This lovely circular path offers beautiful panoramic views of the lake. No technical difficulties on dry ground.
Signposts and signs along most of the route reinforce the good description, which also indicates picnic areas, which we appreciate. Thanks to "Ppillon".
The route is well shaded up to point (16), then there are several sections exposed to the sun.
The dam viewpoint (19) is a bit crowded as it is accessible by car.

A lovely walk with splendid views of the Ain, the dam and the lake.
The beach at Les Plans is reserved for fishing, no swimming.
Pleasant when it's hot because there's a lot of undergrowth.
I recommend it!
