Circular route starting from Grange Haute via the Savoye Farm

A short walk of around 2½ hours (at a leisurely pace with breaks) starting from the Grange Haute housing estate in Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu. Ideal for a family walk with lovely views and plenty of animals to spot (donkeys, horses, sheep, deer).

Description of the walk

Start from the Grange Haute housing estate in Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu.

(S/E) Cross the housing estate via Rue Nicolas Boileau. At the end of this street, continue along the small path leading to Avenue Mozart. Turn left onto this street and follow it until you reach the Y-junction with Chemin de la Poype.

(1) Turn right onto it, cross oneroadto reach asecond.

(2) Turn right here and immediately turn left at the next junction onto a new road. Follow this for a few metres before turning right onto the small path that climbs uphill. Begin a short descent to reach a lovely viewpoint.

(3) Continue straight ahead, pass under the power line and reach a four-way junction.

(4) Continue straight ahead; the path is lined with trees and leads to another multi-way junction.

(5) Be careful here: the Chemin de Savoye on the right is a private road that crosses the farm; it is blocked by a large padlocked gate. It is impossible to take a shortcut here.
Continue straight ahead, passing under two power lines, and follow the almost straight path to reach the Route de Valencin. Turn right onto it until you reach the nearby crossroads.

(6) Turn right onto Chemin de Porte, which continues as Chemin des Dames. Pass under the power lines again and head towards the crossroads at the hamlet of Les Grandes Raies, near a gas installation.

(7) Keep straight ahead and follow this path back to the Grange Haute car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Savoye Farm, about halfway along the route, is an educational farm and also a very good restaurant, ideal for a break.

Difficulty finding the starting point.
Pleasant on the way there as it’s a footpath, but a bit disappointing on the way back as it’s a tarmac road.

It was a lovely walk when we got to the farm... But there were lots of big, crackling electricity pylons, and the walk back along the road was actually quite busy that day!

Not a bad way to stretch your legs and take in the view from the heights of St Pierre de Chandieu. The paths are well-maintained on the way there, and some sections make you want to come back on a mountain bike. The return journey along a small, almost straight road is less interesting.

More of a family stroll than a proper hike. The return journey from 6 is rather uninteresting and mainly along a tarmac road.
Rather than setting off from the housing estate, I suggest starting from the car park behind the secondary school and taking the road that heads south to the right as you leave the car park.(Elevation 252 then 259 on the IGN map. This shaded, steeply ascending road offers, in its upper section (after the Croix de Mission on the right – information panel – a magnificent panorama of the Lyon conurbation, the Monts d’Or and the Monts du Beaujolais in the distance. At the top, don’t miss the pretty little chapel surrounded by its cemetery. Taking the small road that branches off to the right between the houses, you’ll reach point 1.

After passing through the tree-lined housing estate and climbing up to La Poype, you find yourself in the countryside with a view of the Monts and the Lyon conurbation.
Nature changes with the seasons, making it a fascinating sight to behold; in the meadows you’ll spot horses and many magnificent animals, including deer as you pass Savoye Farm.
The route winds through fields of grain and, towards the end, follows a small road with no traffic.
Best done in the morning as there is very little shade.
