Circular starting from Dol-de-Bretagne via Epiniac and the Chemin des Évêques.

A peaceful hike along grassy paths and a few quiet roads. You will follow part of the Chemin des Évêques, which was used by bishops to reach their summer residence. The nearby Château du Domaine des Ormes was once (in the early 14th century) the summer residence of the bishops of Dol-de-Bretagne. Today, it is a campsite. The paths are shaded. If you walk them in autumn, you can collect lots of chestnuts.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Champ Dolent Menhir car park.

(S/E) Follow the road south towards the hamlet. Take the first road on the left, which turns into a grassy path after a hundred metres. This is the Chemin des Évêques.

(1) Cross the D795 carefully and continue along the path opposite. At the crossroads at Les Haies, go straight ahead.

(2) At the next crossroads, take a small road (C17) on the left. Stay on this road for about 1.7 km.

(3) At La Lande de Chadeville (farm), turn right at an acute angle onto a forest path. At a fork, keep left.

(4) At a T-junction, turn left. After about 400 m, continue along a small road that leads to Le Breil.

(5) Carefully cross the D10 and take the small road opposite. Ignore a street on the left, then another on the right. Pass under a high-voltage power line. At the next junction, turn left and pass under the high-voltage power line again. Continue downhill until you reach the D10.

(6) Cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead on a small road that immediately turns right. At the end, turn right and you will come back to the D10.

(7) Cross the road again carefully and continue along the small road opposite. Take the first path on the left, which runs alongside a row of trees and then passes through the undergrowth.

(8) You will come out onto a street (Résidence des Châtaigniers), and follow it to the left. At the next two intersections, turn left.

(9) Carefully make a first turn right then left to cross the D10 (Rue de la Mairie) one last time, and follow Rue du Douet des Roches (D4). Pass a wash house and ignore a street on the right.

(10) Take the next right, Rue du Domaine. When it turns right, take a path on the left that winds between the houses.

(11) Cross a small road and continue along a grassy path that branches off to the left. Cross another road and continue along the path opposite.Walk along a line of trees for about 900 metres. Join a road and follow it to the left for about 40 metres (do not go under the railway bridge).

(12) Then turn left onto a grassy path. This soon turns right and joins the road further on, at a level crossing.

(13) Follow the road to the left. Take the first road on the right and cross the hamlet of Le Petit Pont Gérouard.

(14) At the fork, at a place called Le Grand Pont Gérouard, turn left towards Aubanière. Cross this locality, then cross a stream.

(15) Come out onto the D4 (cross opposite) and follow it to the right. Go around the roundabout on the left, cross the D795, and take the next left, the Route du Menhir (C103). Turn left at the first intersection to quickly return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Menhir of Champ Dolent.
Wash house on Rue du Douet des Roches in Epiniac.
Restored 19th-century wash house with a beautiful roof structure and a roof that collects rainwater. Beautiful wooden pump on the nearby well.
Saint Pierre Church in Epiniac.
The old church retained an 11th-century nave and portal and a 15th-century tower with a gabled roof. The current church was built between 1901 and 1904 to plans by architect Arthur Regnault, in the 15th-century Cornish Breton style. Stained glass windows by Charles Lorin, dated 1901 and 1904. 17th-century altarpiece in the choir.
The Grand Pont Gérouard Manor House.
Remains of a manor house with a cellar topped by a bedroom; the staircase connected the two remaining rooms above. The decoration of the mouldings, the accolade and the protruding window sills, and the composition of the bays suggest a manor house from the 1540s; the roof was modified and an extension added in the 19th century.
