Le Marais Blanc and Le Haut Pont via the Mont Dol hill

The route is mainly in the countryside, through the Marais Blanc and Marais Noir marshes, with no particular difficulties except for the ascent of the Mont-Dol hill via the north face (slippery in wet weather) and the descent to the town hall (uneven steps). The route takes the Chemin Vert between Dol de Bretagne and Mont-Dol. Beautiful view of the Marais Blanc and the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel from the top of the Mont Dol hill.

Description of the walk

Departure from the car park known as "du chalet" at Square de la Résistance.

(S/E) Go down the car park and continue straight on to Rue de Légeard, turn right and, after about 50 m, at the cinema, take the path downhill on the left which ends at Place du Foirail. Walk along the right-hand side of the Dolibulle swimming pool car park. You will reach Impasse de Legeard.

(1) Take the street on the left for 70 metres, then turn right to reach Rue des Tendières. Follow it to the left towards the playground, continue across the bridge over the Guyoult to the crossroads (at the car garage). Cross the road (D676) and take the path opposite, which turns into a grassy trail. Turn right and follow it along the stream on your right.

(2) When you reach the footbridge, continue along the path, which curves in an S-shape, to reach a junction of farm tracks.

(3) At this point, take the track on the right to pass under the road bridge. At the exit, the track turns right, then left and runs alongside the farm buildings to the Manoir de la Bégaudiére. After this, take the path on the left and follow it to the next intersection.

(4) Take the path on the left and continue along it. After a 90° right turn, it leads to a road leading to Chanteloup.

(5) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and cross the hamlet of Chanteloup. Cross the D4, take the road opposite and leave the wayside cross on your left. Cross the railway tracks and continue straight ahead for about 450 metres. Before the bridge, take the path on the left along the Guyoult. At the first farm, keep to the right and, after about 200 metres, continue leaving Ville Mauger on your left and stay on the road.

(6) At the crossroads, take the road on the right and cross the bridge over the Guyoult. At the intersection: beautiful thatched cottage on the right. Cross the D155 and follow the road opposite, then take the first road on the left towards the mound on the right. Stay on the road, keeping to the right until you reach Mont-Dol, pass the place called Le Pied du Tertre, at the crossroads take the road on the left for about 30 metres and take the dirt track on the right, passing between the barriers (public passage). Climb the slope to the mill, which has been converted into a dwelling.

(7) Continue towards the buildings, go around the pond to reach the top and arrive at the site of the old telegraph tower and the Chapel of Our Lady of Hope. You can also visit the mill if it is open. Retrace your steps.

(7) Turn left onto the path to avoid retracing your steps. This path passes through the undergrowth, then runs alongside the Mont-Dol vineyard. Shortly afterwards, descend via a steep staircase that leads to the town hall. When you reach the road, turn left towards the Church of Saint-Pierre.

(8) The church is open to visitors. When you leave the church, take the steps opposite to reach the small Place du Marché, which serves as a car park. Cross Chemin du Pavillon, then head south on Chemin du Chemin Vert. It curves to the right, then immediately turn left and continue until you pass under the railway bridge, then the one under the N174 four-lane road. At the end of the road, take Rue des Murets slightly to the right and go up the stairs.

Notes

Toilets near the landmark (7) and on the Mont-Dol hill.
The tower and chapel on the hill are open to visitors, but the chapel is sometimes closed.
You can also descend the hill by taking the road that leads to the hilltop car park, which ends directly in front of the church. It is very steep.
The station is 300 metres from the chalet car park.

Worth a visit

Two 19th-century windmills dominate the hill. One of them, purchased by the municipality, has been restored: it is the only mill in the bay to have retained its internal mechanism (open during the season).

St Pierre Church: the small church of Saint-Pierre du Mont-Dol was built at the end of the 12th century and modified in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries. The church does not seem to have suffered during the Revolution, as Mont-Dol is Chouan territory.
The murals were restored in 1972. They are the artistic jewel of St Pierre Church.

In Dol-de-Bretagne: the Basilica of Saint Samson, a jewel of Breton Gothic architecture, and the old houses on Grande-Rue-des-Stuarts, which will enchant you. The Maison des Petits Palets, dating from the 12th century, is one of the oldest houses in Brittany. Other attractions include the moat, Rue des Perons and Rue Ceinte, and the menhir of Champ Dolent.

A very well-marked, accessible and enjoyable walk. The climb up Mont Dol isn’t very long, but it is very steep. The view from the top is magnificent.
