The walk starts from Champagnat church. You can park in the church square or the stadium car park.
(S/E) Take the road towards Bellegarde-en-Marche (D9), passing the weighbridge and the granite cross. Leave the road to Montely (Rue de la Forge) on your right and take the path downhill on your right. At the bottom, at the intersection, take the path on the right, pass the cross and climb back up towards the village of Montely.
(1) Cross the village of Montely on the right and follow the D40 road towards the village for 150 metres. At elevation 545, turn right.
(2) At this bend in the road, turn left onto the path and head back up towards the village of La Chaize, without actually going there.
(3) At the intersection, turn left onto a path. Go uphill and, after about 100 metres, turn right onto the path. Continue uphill to a relay antenna. From there, on a clear day, you can see the Massif du Sancy.
(4) Continue straight ahead towards the south-west until you reach a T-junction.
(5) Turn right and continue along the path to Croix du Loup.
(6) From Croix du Loup, retrace your steps for a few dozen metres and continue along the path on the left. Walk north-west then north-north-west until you reach the tarmac track.
(7) Follow the tarmac track north, then north-east. Pass a small acacia plantation.
(8) Turn left to leave the track. Descend to the entrance to the village of Champagnat. On the descent, the peaks of Auvergne can be seen in the distance.
(9) After the oratory, take the sunken path that descends to the right towards the stadium and climb back up towards the church (S/E).
