Note: it is possible to cross the old railway line shortly afterwards (1), as no trains have run between Felletin and Aubusson since the end of 2025 (see the comment posted on 27 August 2023).
Park in the Carrefour car park.
(S/E) Go under the bridge and follow the Creuse upstream. After about 100 m, follow the narrow path on the left, keeping as close to the river as possible. Fifty metres further on, there is a tricky bit: a small rock to step over, but this is definitely the path. After that, the path becomes easy again. Continue along the path between the Creuse and the railway line to reach the Moulin de Botte.
(1) The path climbs up to the railway line. Cross the tracks: no trains run here today, but do look out anyway. Walk about ten metres to the left, then take the path that climbs up the hill to the right. Continue along this path, which runs alongside the railway line.
(2) At the first junction after about 600 m, take the path on the right to climb up to the Bois de la Vierge: this is the ‘challenging’ section with a 100 m climb! Join the tarmac road (D23).
(3) Follow it to the left for 50 m, then cross it with great care (a bend with poor visibility) to rejoin the dirt track on the right. Continue straight on along this track to the houses at Côte Verte: enjoy the view of Le Chapitre, the former castle of the Viscounts of Aubusson.
(4) Once near the houses, do not enter the housing estate but take the small green path on the right: enjoy the view over Aubusson. Further on, you’ll come out onto the tarmac of the Passage Sarrazin and continue. Before the bend, take the shortcut on the right between the houses, keep right and reach the junction where several streets meet.
(5) Continue straight on along Rue Saint-Jean until you reach the Chapelle Saint-Jean de la Cour. Continue to the entrance of the retirement home.
(6) Turn right, cross the garden of the retirement home to find a small footpath on the left leading down to the Roseraie. Go round it by turning left, cross via the footbridge on the right and immediately turn right to reach the rugby pitch. Go round it on the left, reach the banks of the Creuse and turn left. Cross the bridge to return to the car park (S/E).
The path by the old mill that crosses the railway line has been blocked off by a fence (I’m not sure whether it’s the SNCF or the woodland owner). I went round the fence on the right, but I’ll find out.
