Description of the walk

The start of this walk is at: Le Péage de Vizille; there are two small car parks available on Avenue des Maquis de l’Oisans.

(S/E) Head towards the junction with the Route Départementale 1091. A traffic light allows you to cross over to the Chemin du Maniguet, which you should follow.

(1) Ignore Rue Paul Langevin on your right (the return route) and continue along the Chemin du Maniguet until it ends.

(2) Turn off onto Chemin Derrières les Murs and follow this path alongside the curtain wall of Vizille Castle for a good kilometre.

(3) The climb up to the viewpoint begins sharply to the right along a rather steep path.

(4) Take a break at the viewpoint before continuing along a gently sloping path down to a fork in the path.

(5) The climb resumes to the right; look out for the hiking signpost: follow the sign for Montsec. You’ll reach another fork in the path (alt. 755 m).

(6) This is the highest point of the walk. Take the path leading down to the right towards Les Rivoirands. Further down, the path becomes a small tarmac road.

(7) After a wide bend to the right, leave the tarmac section by heading down to the left. Join the Chemin de Cotte Sister, which cuts across a large hairpin bend in the road that you’ll rejoin further down.

(8) At this left-hand bend, leave the road by taking the path straight ahead, then rejoin the road and follow it to the departmental road (D1091).

(9) Walk along it carefully, keeping to the right (traffic can sometimes be very heavy), then turn right onto the Chemin de la Rochette and walk past the school complex. Join Rue Paul Langevin, cross the Canal des Martinets and return to the original junction.

(1) Turn left and follow the outbound route in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

The first part of the hike is very good, the return a little less so because there is a lot of tarmac.

Walk taken on 10 March.
A winter walk, starting from the valley.
A lovely discovery of the Vizille viewpoint.
At the highest point, marked as ‘Bouvière’ on the map, we climbed a few metres and had a picnic on a sunny ledge with a lovely panoramic view!
