Circular route between Vizille and Vaulnaveys

A lovely walk, less monotonous than it seems, ideal for families or during the winter break and in spring. Perfect for following the scent of wild garlic as you pass through the woods; a rural walk with beautiful panoramic views, as well as old and newer houses that make the walk varied. The circular walk can be extended or shortened to suit everyone’s preferences.

Description of the walk

You can reach the starting point by public transport or by car. You can park at the Locomotive car park on Route d’Uriage.

(S/E) Follow the Route d’Uriage towards Vizille, passing by the castle, and go through the tunnel: the only pavement is on your right as you walk, if you are following the route in the direction indicated.

(1) As you emerge from the tunnel, take the street on the right, then immediately turn left onto Rue Malpertuis. Continue to the small car park on your left.

(2) Turn right onto Rue du Château du Roi and, once at the end, continue along Chemin sous les Vignes. From there, follow the GR® White and Red signposted path, keeping in the same direction (north-north-east) until just past Les Pelliets.

(3) Stay on the path, keeping to the left. Ignore two paths on your right leading to the D524, one after the other, and continue to the third junction.

(4) Pass the bridge over the Ruisseau de la Grande Combe on your right, then turn left at the three-way junction about 150 m further on.Follow this ascending path, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of this small valley all along the way. You’ll come out onto the small road that runs through the hamlet of Les Pelliets.

(5) Continue straight on. At the junction where the road meets the footpath, leave the GR® and carry on straight until you reach the point where the road makes a 90° right-hand bend.

(6) Leave the road and head straight on along a path that runs alongside the Ruisseau du Vernon and leads to a bridge across it.

(7) Turn right to cross the small stone bridge, then continue along the Chemin du Stade, passing a rugby pitch (Stade Daniel Petiot) on the way, before joining the road leading towards Vizille (D524). Cross carefully using the pedestrian crossing set back to the left, then retrace your steps to take the small road on the left.

(8) At the junction, follow the road to the right, then keep left at the three-way junction onto Chemin de la Tournerie and carry on to the end.

(9) Turn right onto Route du Pont Neuf, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de Prémol, then turn right at the junction just after it. Continue straight on, cutting across Chemin de la Châtaigneraie on your left and carrying on straight ahead past the houses. You’ll come out onto Promenade de la Mondée.

(10) Take the street on the left and continue straight on until you reach the junction by the Vaulnaveys-le-Bas town hall.

(11) Carry on straight ahead to join the Promenade des Noyers. Walk past the campsite on your right, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau des Mailles and continue for about 150 m.

(12) Turn left onto the dead-end track, then take the path leading uphill to the right, which enters a wonderful forest at wild garlic season. Follow this path until you emerge from the forest, near the houses at Le Plâtre.

(13) Pick up the path again by going round the back of a house: it is clearly signposted and you do not enter the property. The yellow markings will help you, if needed, as you cross the forest. Make sure you keep heading in the same direction, ignoring the adjacent paths, where wild garlic is always abundant in season. You’ll briefly rejoin the tarmac at a road called Chemin du Champ du Loup.

(14) Carry on straight ahead, rejoining the forest path which, further on, meets another track (Chemin de l’Adret). Once at the end, take the small path on the right to quickly reach the track known as Chemin des Corniers.

(15) Turn left and carry on straight ahead until you reach what is practically a dead end.

(16) Then take the path climbing up to the left. You’ll soon reach the Chemin des Allas (GR®738); follow it straight on until you reach the small road of the same name. Enter Vizille and follow the Ruisseau du Vernon to the end of the road. Turn right to rejoin the main road from Vizille to Uriage (D524) straight away.

(17) Cross this busy road carefully using the pedestrian crossing, then turn left and follow the pavement back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are signposts for Vaulnaveys and Vizille, so it’s impossible to get lost.

There are no water points on the route.

Starting from Vaulnaveys may be a better option if you wish to have a picnic at Vizille Castle and see its beautiful gardens. Please note, however, that pets are not allowed within the castle grounds.

(7) Alternative route: carry on straight ahead until you reach the next road on the right, Rue des Chanssures. Turn right, cross the D524 at the pedestrian crossing and take Chemin des Chartreux opposite, which will take you to Vaulnaveys-le-Haut. You will then turn right, after the cemetery, onto the Chemin de la Croix du Maître to rejoin the route described at (9).

An ideal route for the off-season. Easy. No problems at all. The route is quite popular with cyclists and trail runners, but it’s not crowded. Thanks for the suggestion.
