Baracuchet on the edge of Auvergne

You’ll love this walk in summer for its cool, refreshing atmosphere, and in winter for its beautiful snow-covered landscapes. On the edge of the Puy de Dôme, the murmur of the springs adds to the charm of this wooded route. You’ll also pass by the Pierre aux Sept Trous.

Description of the walk

Park on the left on the hard shoulder, opposite the brown ONF sign: ‘Forêt sectionnale de Barge, Le Palais, Le Bennevis, Le Pin’.

(S/E) Take the forest track marked ‘No vehicles over 3.5 tonnes from 1 November to 30 May’.
It turns into a dirt track and leads to a four-way junction at elevation 1192.

(1) Head right, westwards, to a four-way junction at an elevation of 1,249 metres.

(2) In the middle of the dark coniferous woodland, turn left onto the track that runs alongside the two Cinq Fonts spring catchments and then joins the GR®3.

(3) Follow it to the right, passing another Cinq Fonts water catchment, and stay on the wide, sandy track to the right.

(4) Leave the forest track and take a path on the left.

(5) At the Pierre aux Sept Trous, turn right and head back up to the RD113. Cross the road and turn left opposite the small quarry. Follow this path for 400 m.

(6) Before the path starts to go downhill again, turn right into the forest. Continue until you reach a path near a shepherd's hut.

(7) Turn right onto it. It becomes a tarmac road.

(8) At the 1140 mark, leave the road and take a track on the right, heading due south, until you reach a spring catchment. Continue along this track, which overlooks the D113 and joins it further on.

(9) Cross the road and take the track opposite.

(10) At the shepherd's hut, veer slightly to the right and follow this track uphill to the car park. (S/E)

The description alone is not detailed enough to complete the hike with peace of mind. Fortunately, there is GPS guidance
