Walk along the ridges of Montsevroux

A short, unpretentious walk, ideal for a sunny winter’s afternoon. Small tarmac roads and grassy paths which may be very wet or even muddy. A sweeping 360° panorama with views of the Pilat massif.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the signposted car park, Chemin de Sarrou, below the primary school, opposite the castle.

Yellow markings

(S/E) Start by heading down Chemin du Sarrou. Cross the Ruisseau du Plesset and head back up the path (which can be very wet). Join a tarmac road (Chemin des Roberts).

(1) Turn left and join a crossroad (D46B). Turn left, pass a road coming from the right and join the grassy track on the right, opposite Route Combe du Creux, heading towards Montseveroux.

(2) Take this grassy path (which may also be very wet). You’ll reach a hedge at the top; turn right. Before the houses, a wooden post indicates a left turn; take the grassy path that descends to a tarmac road. Head towards the River Sanne but do not cross it.

(3) Follow the stony path that climbs up to the left, which becomes passable near a house. Continue along this path until you reach a crossroad (D37A).

(4) Follow it to the left and, at the crossroads, take the road leading uphill to the right, Route de Sibuze, and follow it between the houses to No. 270.

(5) Take the road closed to all traffic except authorised vehicles, then follow the grassy path that heads downhill to the right (which can also be very wet). Continue to a junction near a large tree and a house on the left.

(6) Turn right onto the path on the right which descends between the fields and then along the edge of the woods. Reach the end of the field on the left and you’ll find a fork. Be careful not to miss the path between the hedges which branches off to the left (look out for the yellow markings). The path climbs slightly and comes out onto a road (D37A).

(7) Turn right and head towards Montsevroux Castle. Feel free to enter the inner courtyard. Reach the car park via the small steps by the school (S/E).

• A short walk that we started in Monsteroux-Milieu to bring the total distance to 13.5 km. Coming from Lyon, we first stopped for a quick bite to eat at a café-bar-delicatessen tucked away in a terraced house at 116 Chemin de la Varèze, which opens at 7 am.
• We were able to view the charming 12th-century church in Monsteroux from the outside
• We then joined the hiking trail at Montseveroux, a very pretty village with some beautiful houses built of rounded pebbles.
• In Montseveroux, you must visit the castle, which is now home to the town hall, and walk around it: the grounds are beautifully landscaped with lawns, which really show the castle off to its best advantage.
• Next to the castle, pop into the Montseveroux café-bar for a coffee; it’s retained its original charm, as the owner has kept her parents’ décor and added her own touches.
• A very gentle walk, which was ideal for my knees, which are due for a hyaluronic acid treatment very soon! 😊

A short, leisurely walk best enjoyed in mid-season as there is little shade
