Route around the Arbre Triomphal

A lovely walk through the hills of the Côtes d'Arey, in search of the Arbre Triomphal. Very pleasant in summer as much of the route is through woodland. An easy walk with no significant elevation gain. We completed the walk in about 1½ hours, stopping to take photos.

Description of the walk

The starting point of the walk is at the junction of the Montée de la Vermillière and the Chemin de Revollet.

Setting off from the church at Les Côtes d’Arey, take the D131A towards the hamlet of Saint Mamert. Pass in front of the chapel and continue to the hamlet via the Saint-Mamert-le-Bas climb, then the Saint-Mamert-le-Haut climb. Please note that the track is often used by farm machinery, so ensure you park your vehicle correctly.

(S/E) Take the wide path that continues straight ahead due east and crosses the Révolets National Forest.

(1) When you reach the “Les Révolets – 412 m” junction, take the path on the left marked in yellow.

(2) When you reach “La mare à la boi”, a biodiversity area, continue to a clearing, following the path marked in yellow.

(3) At the clearing, walk close to the electricity pylon before turning left.

(4) Go round the meadow and you will soon enter the forest, keeping to the left. Continue straight on until you reach the stream. The Arbre Triomphal, with its trunk shaped like a triumphal arch, is not far away and clearly visible on the right.

(5) Turn right and take the path closest to the tree.

(6) Pass close to the Méditerranée-Rhône Pipeline and continue towards the hamlet of Chez Maurice. At the end, turn left.

(7) At the junction, continue left onto Chemin du Coin (slight uphill). When you reach La Vermillère, continue straight ahead.

(8) At the junction, take the road on the left to complete the circular route (S/E).

Worth a visit

Before reaching the start of the walk, you will pass by the Chapel of Saint Mamert.
Built inthe 11th century in an early Romanesque style, this chapel was one of the three parish churches of the Côtes d'Arey in the Middle Ages. It is dedicated to Saint Mamert, one of the first bishops of Vienne. Situated on a promontory, it offers a view of the Pilat massif in the distance.
