Description of the walk

Car park at the church in Anjoutey, Rue de Bourg-Sous-Châtelet.
The route is marked with a red ring.

(S/E) Head west along the Madeleine. Cross the footbridge upstream from the road bridge.
Turn right onto Rue de la Charme. In the left-hand bend, leave the village, leaving Rue du Moulin on your right.

(1) 150 metres further on, turn right onto a path. Pass a path on the left and two on the right, continuing straight ahead between two ponds. The path winds through the forest with small ascents and descents. The markings are helpful. Pass a wide path on the left and continue for 250 metres to a crossroads.

(2) Turn right onto the wide gravel path that leaves the forest and leads to Rue d'Eloie (D58).

(3) Cross over and continue straight ahead along Rue de l'École Maternelle. Walk along the Madeleine, cross it to the right at the next bridge, and continue to the left along the other bank. Continue along Rue du Centre until you reach the crossroads with Grande Rue. Admire the old castle opposite, which, according to the plaque, is the Bonnaymé Training Centre.

(4) Then turn left (north) onto Grande Rue. About a hundred metres further on, note the buildings of the old spinning mill on the left. Then pass in front of Saint-Valbert Church and continue to the roundabout.

(5) Turn right onto Rue de Rougemont. Pass the museum (the Forge d'Étueffont) and then the post office.

(6) In the right-hand bend, leave Rue de Rougemont and turn slightly left onto Rue de la Chapelle. After 50 metres, continue to the left. The road turns into an uphill path. Steps have been built to make the climb easier.

(7) At the chapel, turn left and descend slightly. After a right-hand bend, continue straight ahead in a north-easterly direction. At the T-junction, follow the tarmac road to the left for 50 metres.

(8) At the crossroads, go straight up to quickly reach a beautiful viewpoint over Le Salbert and the Haute-Saône mountains (sign showing the peaks). Retrace your steps.

(8) Then turn left and head towards the farm. Descend, leaving paths on your right and left. Archers sometimes practise on the field next to the path. Arrive at the D2.

(9) Take the D2 on the left for 300 metres. After the bend and the small pond, turn right onto the path. Climb for 200 metres and turn right again. The red ring markings are helpful (be careful, another blue-marked route starts on the other side).

(10) Cross the Ruisseau de Bourg stream. Leave the forest and pass between two ponds. 200 metres further on, there is a very pretty view of the Vosges mountains. Continue straight ahead and arrive at Anjoutey via Rue Frairie. Pass the cemetery and then turn right at the church to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Departure from the church car park in Anjoutey.
If it is full, there is another car park in front of the town hall at 1 Rue Frairie, 90170 Anjoutey.

It is possible to start the circular in Étueffont, at the car park in front of the market and the swimming pool. Address: 41A Grande Rue, 90170 Étueffont. In this case, start from the description above.

Visorando was provided with information by Mr Chevalley, a volunteer member of Balisage90.

Worth a visit

Anjoutey, Les Anjoutinois.

Place names: Aniutel (1234), Enjutel (1303), Anschatingen and Anschettingen (1394), Enschide (1579).
In 1234, Thierry, Lord of Rougemont, donated a property located in Anjoutey to the Priory of Saint-Nicolas near Rougemont. The village was then under the jurisdiction of the Lieutenant of Rosemont. Around 1332, the Rosemont estate was attached to the County of Ferrette, which remained in the possession of the Habsburgs until the Thirty Years' War.
In 1775, the current church was built, dedicated to Saint Vendelin. Long an agricultural village, Anjoutey saw the establishment of small industries in the 19th century that took advantage of the river's hydraulic power: a tannery mill transformed the oak bark harvested by the inhabitants into a powder used for tanning leather. Around 1855, mechanical weaving and various hand-weaving workshops employed more than two hundred people. In 1932, a serious fire put an end to this activity. In the autumn of 1913, the Belfort-Étueffont railway line, which ran through the village, was inaugurated. It remained in operation for 35 years, until July 1948. Coal was also mined in 1775 and then in 1843.

Étueffont

Its inhabitants are called the Taffions (after the local dialect).
Place names
Étueffont-Bas: Estuefon (1260), Eytauffen (1296), Eitůfun (1316), Stauffen prope Rotenburg (1337), Stoffen/Eisthoffan (1427), Nider Stauffen (1579), Estueffond (1779). In German: Nieder Stauffen.
Étueffont-Haut: Ober Stauffen (1579), Estueffon-Dessus (1620), Stueffon/Stouffont/Stueffont (1533), Étuffont le Haut (1793), Étueffont-Haut (1801). In German: Ober Stauffen.

During ancient times, a Gallo-Roman fortified camp was established at the top of Fayé.
1188: First mention of the name Étueffont in a bull issued by Pope Clement III.
1296: Thiébaud, Count of Ferrette, ceded the right of patronage of the church to Lucelle Abbey.
1354: Étueffont is considered the capital of a town hall attached to the seigneury of Rosemont.
From the end of the Middle Ages, the village turned to emerging industries: a forge that processed iron produced by the Bethonvilliers furnace, silver-lead mining in the nearby Vosges mountains (the peak named Tête du Mineur is a reminder of this), forestry and charcoal production. Later, a mill was built on the river and ponds were dug. From the beginning of the 19th century, hand weaving developed, followed in the middle of the century by the Boigeol-Japy mechanical weaving mill.
In 1879, the Zeller brothers, originally from Oberbruck (Haut-Rhin), set up weaving mills and a spinning mill in Étueffont. These factories prospered for half a century (1880-1930), providing work for several hundred workers. However, the crisis of 1929 marked the beginning of the decline of the textile industry, which ceased operations in Étueffont around 1960. The former château of René Zeller now houses the Thérèse-Bonnaymé vocational training centre.

We were lucky to do this hike in good weather, so we were able to enjoy beautiful views along the way and during our lunch at the chapel.
Apart from the section through the centre of Etueffont, the 10 km route is wooded.

A beautiful walk, very well signposted, no hesitation. Beautiful views. Even if the crossing of Etueffont is a little long, you don't really feel like you're in town and the pavement is welcome. It's true that for the arrival in Anjoutey, the 300 metres on the main road require special attention because the road is busy, including with lorries.

Lovely ride but too much tarmac!
On leaving ETUEFFONT before heading back to ANJOUTEY, you have to cross a very dangerous road used by lots of lorries!
A shame.

Superb hike...the climb up to the chapel was a bit tough, but the reward was discovering a beautiful chapel and a lovely spot to stop for a snack.

Superb hike, very good explanations, but the climb to the chapel, where there are tables and benches for taking a break, is really tough.
