Description of the walk

Park in the square near Saint-Pierre Church.

(S/E) Facing the church, turn right (north-east) and head down a small path (GR® 13, red and white markings) to the D37.

(1) Follow it to the left. At the bottom, pass in front of the Treux farm, cross the bridge over the Roche, which winds through meadows, and reach the D27. Take it to the right with care for about 80 m.

(2) Opposite the house (old Café Bouillot sign), turn left onto a path under the canopy of trees. It climbs towards Mont Touleur (which rises to 582 m), then skirts around it. In the undergrowth, turn right, then left, and keep heading along the hillside until you reach the D192, which you follow to the left for about 60 metres.

(3) Head up to the right along a wide path. At the edge of the woods, continue straight ahead and, further on, pass another path on the right. You will then reach a Fork in the road.

(4) Leave the GR® 13 by turning left. After the pine forest, at the crossroads, turn
right and then turn left towards Les Fraichots, a key site of the Resistance in the Morvan.

(5) Walk past the ruins and head back down the path to the monument.

(6) Cross the D192 and head along the path opposite. Walk down to the houses at Le Bouchet, follow the
small road on the left which crosses a pass.

(7) Keep left, head back down and reach a three-way junction.

(8) Head right, cross the Maulot farm and continue along a dirt track. Climb through the
undergrowth.

(9) At the Croix aux Liards, head downhill along the path slightly to the left of the cross. You’ll come out
onto a road (Croix Sainte-Adélaïde), turn left and walk straight across a farmyard.

(10) Walk past the chapel of Saint-Gengoult and continue to the right until you reach the D27.

(11) Cross it carefully and take the Chemin de Vannoise opposite until you reach a crossroads.

(12) Turn left back towards the village of Larochemillay: “beautiful bourgeois residences from the 15th to the 18th century, tower
and ramparts of the former medieval castle, Château de la Roche (private)”. Head to the square and the car park (S/E).

A route offering a wide variety of landscapes, slopes and points of interest, of moderate difficulty, marked from La Rochemillay.
Highlights: the authentic deciduous forest (chestnut, oak and beech trees), the opportunity for reflection at the Maquis Louis site thanks to the information panels (few visible ruins), the viewpoints, the low number of visitors.
Weak points: the return journey in full sun on a tarmac road makes the off-season preferable, the yellow markings are sometimes missing (it is better to have a GPS), and visits to the exterior of the château can only be paid for in cash on Heritage Days.

A walk that takes you mostly through woods ablaze with autumn colours. Lovely paths and trails. Access to the FRAICHOTS scrubland is rather difficult as the vegetation is so dense and partly consists of brambles... But the place inspires a sense of reverence for the Resistance fighters who died for France. The village of LAROCHEMILLAY is home to beautiful bourgeois mansions, a superb château and a lovely church.
A lovely walk, though a bit too much tarmac.
Well worth doing nonetheless.

A brilliant hike, but you’ll need a GPS track to find your way – otherwise, good luck! Particularly between the points (4) and (5), the path is hard to spot and you’ll need to pluck up the courage to venture through the brambles. It’s a really interesting trail, but it deserves to be better signposted and maintained.
