Around Roche

An invigorating walk, with little tarmac, on pretty paths in the woods around Bonnefamille and Roche. You will pass the monument at the Châtain cross and, after crossing Roche, you will wind your way through the woods, where you can discover the cup-marked stones of Roche.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park below Bonnefamille Church, near the boules court.

(S/E) Walk back up towards the church and take Rue de la Liberté on the left. Continue straight ahead, keeping to the left and leaving two streets on your right. At the fork, take the right-hand path.

(1) Ignore the return path on the right and continue straight on, skirting a field and passing under some power lines.

(2) Shortly afterwards, at the edge of this field, turn left, following the small hedge running alongside the field. Follow the narrow path which turns left at the end of the hedge, then right, running alongside the woods. You will then follow a path that is often very muddy in wet weather. Continue straight on until you reach the D36. Follow the path on the right that runs alongside it, until you reach the monument to those shot in 1944.

(3) Take the road on the right, which turns into a track, until you reach the next track on your left. Follow it to a junction and turn left. Go down this track, making sure to take the track on the right at the next junction, before reaching the D36.

(4) Follow this track and, shortly afterwards, take the sharp left turn onto the track on the left. This can be quite muddy depending on the level of the little Turitin stream. Pass it on the right immediately afterwards to come out onto the D126, Route de Turitin.

(5) Cross it to the right, taking great care, and walk up for about fifty metres, then take the small path on the left which climbs up the embankment. Follow this path, which runs parallel to the road, then climbs steeply and leads to a water catchment, then onto the Route du Réservoir. Walk down it to the left until you reach the junction with the Chemin de Trable.

(6) Follow it to the right for over 1 km until the next junction, at a place called Maison Lassale.

(7) Follow the road straight on (Chemin de la Cesse), then, immediately afterwards, leave the tarmac and take the path on the left. Follow this straight on, passing a pylon.

(8) Shortly after this, turn right onto the path towards Roche. Continue straight on at the next junction, returning to the tarmac. Continue on to Roche, until you reach the D124 road to Four. Take this to the right until you reach the stop sign on the D126.

(9) Cross it to the left at the pedestrian crossing, then head back up the road, before turning right onto the one-way Rue des Sitelles and arriving at a junction.

(10) Continue straight ahead along the small footpath, running alongside the wooden fence. Carry on straight ahead along Rue des Écoles, then, at the end, turn left onto Chemin des Bersoudières, for just under 100 m.

(11) Turn right onto the dirt track with a ‘No Entry’ sign (except for authorised users). Walk down it without worry, cross the Ruisseau le Bivet stream, then, at the end, take the path on the right, just behind a fence. Follow it straight on, ignoring a path on the left, then on the right. Then, turn left when you reach a junction with Chemin des Bachasses.

(12) Immediately afterwards, turn right, leaving this track, passing under some power lines. Continue through the woods to the next junction, then take Chemin de Grands Fonds on the right and head towards Route de Bonnefamille, the D124. Taking great care, follow it to the left for about a hundred metres. Reach the end of the safety barrier on your left, where the stream moves away from the road.

(13) Take the small path on your right, which climbs into the woods. At the next junction, turn left onto Chemin de la Tour. Pass a path on the right leading to cup-marked stones, and another on the left, then continue to the house at La Tour.

(14) Shortly after this, take the path on the right, then another right shortly afterwards. Next, follow the path on the left which goes straight down and joins the path you took on the way there.

(1) Turn left onto the path that takes you straight back to Saint-Antoine de Bonnefamille Church. Turn right after the church to return to the car park (S/E).

Problem at point 13: the narrow path that’s supposed to lead up into the woods is nowhere to be found, or perhaps the map is wrong. The only path (which is very steep) that we found is located beyond the pond. This problem caused us to lose a lot of time. It’s a shame, as the countryside is very beautiful and the route is rarely used.
