Around Port Manec'h

From the Saint-Nicolas Chapel in the heart of the seaside town of Port Mananec'h, this route descends to the beach, running alongside it at a height before joining the coastal path followed by the GR® 34. After a slightly steep section, the hike continues inland to reach a cove of the Karstic Cave and then the river, which you follow to Port Manec'h.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near the Saint-Nicolas Chapel in Port Manec'h or, if unavailable, in the temporary grass car park open during the summer.

White and red GR®34 signposts

(S/E) From the car park, head down towards the beach, take the Sentier André Jolly (painter) on the right and follow this path, which initially overlooks the beach. At the end of the path, turn left into Rue de l'Aven, which descends towards the port.

No markings

Just before this, leave the GR® for a short while and go up to the right along Rue du Port until you reach the start of a footpath.

(1) Turn left onto Impasse du Phare, a dead-end road. Then take the footpath on the left, Chemin de Port Manec'h (visible on OSM), and follow it for a beautiful view of the port, the beach and the mouth of the karstic cave. Continue until you reach the junction with the coastal path and the GR®34.

White and red markings for the GR®34

(2) Follow this path, which alternates between ascents and descents, sometimes via steps carved into the rock. Pass under the lighthouse on the hill and continue south-west. Pass a vertical rock called the Doigt de Dieu (God 's Finger) and, shortly after, look for a path starting on the right.

PR® marked in yellow (in the opposite direction)

(3) Leave the coastal path and the GR®34 and turn onto this path which climbs straight up and leads to a street. Pass a dead-end street on the left and continue climbing until you reach a crossroads.

(4) Turn left into the Allée des Pins, which is a dead end. At the end, ignore a path on the right and continue straight ahead. Climb up to the right between a wooded area and a meadow. At the top, turn right and head towards the Kerambris farm.

(5) Go around it on the right, continue along its access road, cross a small road and continue to the D77.

(6) Turn left, follow the departmental road for about 100 m, cross it with caution and continue along the small road, C11, opposite. At the four-way intersection, go straight ahead and pass between the Kervren nurseries.

No signposts

(7) At No. 37, turn right, continue along the nurseries and follow the access road to Château de Poulguin (on the left, beautiful fountain and wash house). Pass a small car park, continue to the castle wall and rejoin the GR®.

White and red GR®34 signposts

(8) Turn right into the woods, reach the edge of the karstic cave, then move away from it and go around the Anse de Poul Don. You will arrive at a slipway (beautiful view of the karstic cave).

(9) Go back up the road, Corniche de Poul Don, turn left, then rejoin the main road. Continue until you reach a fork.

No signposts

(10) Take the right-hand fork, Venelle de Poul-Don, then, before a crossroads, turn onto the path on the left and follow this lane which comes out opposite the Chapelle Saint-Nicolas and join the car park (S/E).

Poulguin Castle: the Poulguin manor house, on the edge of the karstic cave, seems to have been built in the early 16th century. It is mentioned in a marriage certificate from 1525. It is flanked by a chapel and a dovecote (not open to visitors).

Former customs post levying a tax on entry to the river. The lords of Poulguin had the right to fire cannonballs at boats that passed without paying the entrance fee to the river.
