Around Peypin

This hike around Peypin will allow you to discover the village, its history and its hills.
You will walk along a stream, which is remarkable when in full flow with its small waterfall and pools, and follow paths through shady valleys.
The hike ends with a tour of the village's narrow streets and a visit to the castle. If you wish, you can skip this last part (see (8) for things to do nearby).

Description of the walk

Departure from the car park located at Impasse de Manon des Sources.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn right and then take Avenue du Pont on the left, where you will have a nice view of the castle ruins. Walk towards the roundabout and then towards the D46a (Route du Régage).

(1) About ten metres after the roundabout, leave the tarmac road. A small path climbs steeply up to the left towards the woods. It is marked in yellow. Follow these markings at first.

(2) Nice view, continue along the path.

(3) Immediately turn left onto the small path that descends just after the hunter's cabin, still following the yellow markings. You will descend into the valley. At the bottom of the valley, you will come to a small stream. In wet weather, a trickle of water flows in places. In the middle of summer, it is completely dry. However, after heavy rain, you can see a beautiful waterfall and several pools filled with water (see photos).
The yellow trail crosses the stream bed several times. It seems to disappear at one point among the rocks, but you can find it again without too much difficulty.

(4) The path then leads to a forest firebreak track at a barrier. Take the path uphill to the left. A little further on, it is concreted for about 100 metres.

(5) At the top, at a new gate, leave the yellow trail and the DFCI track and continue climbing to the right towards a hunting cabin, which you will pass.
The path continues to climb and then descends. You will then return to the DFCI track. Turn right at this intersection. The DFCI track descends to a small house.

(6) You are now at Font de Mule. About 500 m further on, there is a spring that flows all year round, but you will not pass it (see below for points of interest near the hike). Turn left at point 6 towards the small house, go through the gate and follow the path. The path runs alongside a small field and then plunges into Mau Vallon (meaning "bad valley").
This takes you down into the old bed of a stream. The valley is shaded and quite narrow in places. This path leads to the Chemin des Mules.

(7) Turn left and walk up this concrete path for about 50 metres.
When you reach the last house at the top of the path, a trail branches off to the left. This will take you up another valley.

(8) Turn right towards a ruined sheepfold 300 metres further on. Turn right at the sheepfold. The path passes behind the sheepfold. You will then come to a fork; take the left-hand path. Further on, a small path descends to the right towards a tarmac road: the "Montée de La Bergerie".
Cross the D7 and take Rue de La Source, then Avenue des Pegoulières. Follow this road to the end towards the village.
At the end of this avenue, turn right onto Avenue des Bellonnets, then Rue de l'Abbé Émile Vallier. Climb up towards the castle ruins, passing behind the church.

Then head back down Rue de l'Église to Place Louis Julien.
Further on, turn right onto the D46a and after a few dozen metres you will reach the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Update July 2021: the car park originally planned for this hike is now in a blue zone. I have therefore slightly modified the starting point and the map.

There is no drinking water available except in the village pubs. Remember to bring appropriate equipment.
In summer, remember to check the mountain access map before setting off to ensure that access to the Garlaban massif is permitted.

Worth a visit

(2) From this spot, on the left of the path, you can see the Cride hill.
You can see horizontal stone bars towards the centre and top of the hill. These are the remains of a Gallo-Roman oppidum dating fromthe 6th century BC. These are the oldest traces of habitation in the village.
Continuing along the path for about 200 metres, there is a viewpoint offering views of:
- sainte-Victoire to the north,
- to the west, Mont Julien,
- to the east, Sainte-Baume,
- and to the south, Mont des Marseillais.

(6) If you do not turn left at the small house but continue to the right and then take the uphill road, about 500 metres further on, a wooden table and benches under the trees are a pleasant place to take a break (GPS point 43.36917 5.57705). They are about ten metres from the spring.

(8) When you reach the old sheepfold, the more adventurous can take a detour and turn left. This will take you to the top of Cride Hill, where you will find the Gallo-Roman oppidum (GPS coordinates: 43.37762 5.57345). It is very difficult to access due to the undergrowth. All that remains are a few piles of stones and collapsed walls. However, the view from the top of the hill is worth the effort (be careful of the cliff). But don't be afraid to brush against the thorns on the way up, as there is no path.

At the intersection (8), if you are allergic to civilisation and want to avoid visiting the village, you can turn left instead of right. This will allow you (staying on your right) to return to point 4 and thus reach the starting point.

Between (8) and (S/E) Rue Pégoulières, here is a brief explanation of the name. The agricultural sector has always been underdeveloped due to the terrain surrounding the village. The main activities were mining for coal and pégoule. Pégoule is obtained from pine resin, which is sticky, as they say here. Pégoule was used to waterproof the hulls of boats. However, the winter of 1709 put an end to this activity. The cold was so severe that most of the pine trees froze and died. It was an economic disaster for the village.

Le Castellas is a ruined castle located in the centre of the village. It was built in the12th century by Pierre Brémond. It was destroyed inthe 16th century by the Duke of Épernon during the reign of Henry IV.

A beautiful, varied hike, alternating between small paths, trails, tracks and rocky terrain.
The stream was carrying more than just a trickle of water (heavy rain a few days before the hike), making some passages tricky.
Very beautiful landscapes of the surrounding mountains and discovery of the village.

Well-described route.
The Mauvallon is indeed very uncomfortable to descend, but not dangerous.
The village of Peypin didn't strike me as the most interesting part of the hike...

A beautiful hike through a wild valley, done early in the morning because of the heat (fairly shaded overall). It took 4½ hours instead of 3 hours 20 minutes because of detours (Cride hill). We couldn't find the spring indicated 500 metres from the trail.

The Mau Vallon is quite disturbing and lives up to its name, which means "bad valley". In my opinion, this section is not moderately difficult. It is completely isolated, with numerous traces of blood from hunted animals that have probably died. This part of the hike was so difficult that we cut it short and returned to the car park as soon as we left this awful valley. Does this valley stay dry in rainy weather or does it turn into a torrent? We should have read Gabelou's comment before and not after!
Other than that, we only encountered two hikers, empty hunters' hides, used cartridges and traces of blood. Otherwise, it was cool

I was pleasantly surprised by this beautiful walk, even though the Cride stream was dry.
As a bonus at the pass (pt 5), I had no difficulty reaching the summit of La Cride off the trail, judging by sight, and returning the same way.
In the end, taking the time to take photos and enjoy a 20-minute picnic break, the entire hike, including a visit to the castellas, took 3 hours and 15 minutes

You need to find the spring, which is an ideal spot for a picnic. There are two tables with benches. At the cistern, after the pretty shed, cross the field on the left and you will see the red and yellow markings that lead back into the woods. Follow them and you will quickly arrive at the spring. The distance needs to be adjusted to 8.5 km with a total elevation gain of 500 metres if you do the entire route, including the spring and the castle ruins at the top of the village.

A pleasant short hike in an easterly wind, taking 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Only the descent into the "Mau vallon" valley is a bit difficult because it is in the bed of a stony stream.

We didn't visit the village.

A very interesting hike that allows you to discover a little-known part of the Massif de la Cride in Peypin. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains (Sainte Victoire) and secret valleys.

A little more than "average" even if short, as it is a succession of climbs and the Mauvallon (perhaps because it was particularly damaged by recent rain - a succession of deep potholes and slippery rocks) was particularly challenging.

The climb back up to the village towards the Manon des Sources car park is not great at the end of the route.

You absolutely must visit the spring by taking a detour at WPt 6 "Font de Mule". The place is charming, shaded, and the tables and benches are very welcoming.

On the way back, just at the start of the "cement" before crossing the departmental road, on the left is the Maison de l'Apiculteur de Peypin (Peypin Beekeeper's House). Full of local natural products, honey and honey products, including "Suce-miel" (honey suckers), a local speciality that has been around for ages. He sells them on site in his lab and at "Parlo Prouvencaou".

On a Thursday during the week, we didn't meet ANYONE on the entire route except for two local mushroom hunters when we arrived after the cistern at WPt 8.

A beautiful, varied walk, partly in the shade of the valleys and partly with unobstructed views
A minor inconvenience at the start: the parking spaces near the start are in a blue zone, which makes parking difficult if you don't know the area

A lovely walk away from the crowds, surrounded by beautiful vegetation that is coming back to life... no difficulty, just take care in the Mau Vallon, which remains damp and therefore slippery

a beautiful hike with superb views of the hills, Sainte-Victoire Mountain and the village of Peypin.
The descent into Mau Vallon is very shaded, so I wouldn't recommend it after rain as the path is a little slippery in places.
