The Grand Vallon via Mont du Marseillais and Col du Régage

An alternative route to the Grand Vallon other than via Lascours. This route starts from Pichauris, climbs up to Mont du Marseillais, follows the Sentier des Tourdes, then descends to the Pas du Grand Vallon. The ascent of the Grand Vallon is a classic route featuring the famous, highly technical section equipped with chains (see § practical information) before reaching the Col du Régage. The return to the hamlet of Pichauris follows theGRP®2013. Varied and magnificent scenery throughout the route.
Please note: there are a few difficult sections; please read the route description carefully.

Description of the walk

On the D908, take the D46a at the Auberge de Pichauris. Drive past the park car park and park further on at the large Micocouliers car park, indicated by a sign.

(S/E) Pass through a gate and head south along theGRP®2013trail, marked in yellow and red, which runs alongside a picnic area. After a left-hand bend, you’ll reach a Y-junction.

(1) Turn left and follow the path which climbs up to a barrier and an abandoned house. Turn right onto theGRP®. Pass a riding centre and reach a tarmac road at an elevation of 425 metres. Turn right onto this road and reach a footpath just before the bend in the road.

(2) Leave the road and follow theGRP® path opposite. At the top, you’ll reach an X-junction. Continue straight on, following the yellow markings. Join the tarmac road and follow it to the right for about 50 m.

(3) Leave the road again and take theGRP® path, which turns immediately left, heading east. The stony path climbs steadily. You will reach a T-junction.

(4) Leave theGRP® which heads off to the left and continue straight on. Join the track leading to Mont du Marseillais. Cross it and take the path opposite, which rejoins this track further up. Turn right and, at the next junction, continue straight ahead to reach the Mont du Marseillais facilities. Admire the 360° view. To the north, follow the yellow and red markings of theGRP®2013.

(5) Take this path and walk for about 80 m. You will reach a cairn and a Y-junction. Turn right onto the unmarked path which passes beneath the cliffs of Mont du Marseillais and joins, further on, the Sentier des Tourdes, marked in yellow. You will reach a Y-junction.

(6) Keep to the left for a stony descent. Watch out for slippery patches. You will reach a Y-junction.

(7) Turn sharp right towards Le Pas du Grand Vallon, signposted on a rock and marked in light blue. Here too, the descent is stony and slippery. Take care. You’ll reach the start of the Grand Vallon and a T-junction.

(8) Leave the light blue markings and turn right into the valley. The start of the path is overgrown and features large flat slabs. It then becomes more rugged with numerous rocks to climb over, using your hands for support. You’ll reach the foot of the large potholes.

(9) On the left, use the cable to cross a very steep slope. Further on, do the same on the right-hand side. Finally, the most difficult section: using your arm strength to cross two large potholes fitted with chains. The rest of the route is rugged, with more large rocks to climb over. You’ll reach the end of the valley and a Y-junction.

(10) Keep to the left. The path climbs. On the left is the Baume Plate cave, marked on a rock. You’ll reach a T-junction.

(11) Turn sharply right towards the Col du Régage, indicated by a sign. This path, running along a ledge, is very pleasant. You’ll reach the pass and a junction with a track.

(12) Take theGRP®2013path opposite, also marked in light blue, and follow it. Admire the scenery. Below, note the hamlet of Pichauris. You’ll reach an X-junction.

(13) Turn right towards the orientation table indicated by a sign. Then head north-east to arrive to the left of the large meadow in the hamlet of Pichauris. Explore the area. Follow the main track heading east. You’ll reach a Y-junction and an old gypsum quarry.

(14) Turn left onto the Chemin des Bergers, then return to the original junction from the outward journey.

(1) Turn left and return to the Parking des Micocouliers (S/E).

Notes

For reference: the author’s time for this route was 4 hours 20 minutes (excluding breaks).

The route is classified as difficult for the ascent of the Grand Vallon: in addition to the numerous rocks to step over, where you need to use your hands, there is one particularly technical section, approximately 130 m long, marked by signs. Crossing the large potholes is done using chains and cables, and solely by arm strength. This requires good physical fitness and may put some hikers off.
The rest of the route is of moderate difficulty.

Do not undertake this hike in wet weather.

A lovely walk with varied terrain and stunning views of the surrounding area.
The route is well-marked and the paths are passable. The first section of the route, starting from Mont du Marseillais (point 5), has been cleared. It is very pleasant. It presents no difficulty. The section from point 6 onwards is slightly less scenic but still easy.
The most technical section is the climb up the Grand Vallon. You mustn’t be afraid to use your hands. The crucial point is the passage through the second pothole, which is quite a workout.
If you’re with a group or children, it may be useful to bring a length of rope to secure the passage.
Once you’ve left the Vallon, the rest is easy.
