Around Neuviller-sur-Moselle

Hike between the wild Moselle, ponds and the Canal de l'Est (southern branch). A very pleasant route in spring or summer. Beautiful views of the wild Moselle and the canal.

Description of the walk

Head to Neuviller-sur-Moselle and join Rue de la Manique. Continue straight on, leaving the C3 towards St-Remimont on your right, to find the entrance to the car park above the cemetery on your left.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head towards Rue de la Manique, follow it to the right and go down Rue de l’Église, keeping to the right. At the stop sign, turn left and you’ll reach the junction with Rue de la Mairie.

(1) Turn right onto this street and, at the town hall, first turn left then right to go round the school and take the path known as "Les Prés de Lorey", leading to the canal bank.

(2) Turn left onto the GR®5F, which runs alongside the canal to Lock No. 40 at Neuviller-sur-Moselle. Turn right onto the bridge crossing the canal, then left. After about 100 m, turn right onto the path that runs between the ponds, to the banks of the Moselle (elevation 241 on the IGN map).

(3) Turn right, following the wild Moselle; the path veers away from the river and continues straight on before rejoining it. Walk about 200 m to the right, then take the first path on the right, which leads back to the canal bank.

(4) Turn left, follow the canal southwards to Bayon Lock No. 39.

(5) Walk along the left-hand side of Route de Bayon for about 150 m, cross it carefully and take the path known as “À l’Eau Salée” on the right. Follow it to Lock No. 38 at Roville-devant-Bayon, passing by the 248-metre mark.

(6) Just before the lock, cross the canal and follow the Chemin de l'Écluse, then Rue du 4 Septembre 1944. Cross Avenue du Général de Gaulle with care, and continue to the crossroads near the school.

(7) Turn right onto Route de Laneuveville (GR®5F), cross the D9 with care, and continue due north on the GR®5F. After a right-hand bend and about a hundred metres, the path joins the D570 (Grande Rue).

(8) Cross the Grande Rue (D570) with care and, following the same signposting, continue straight ahead onto Chemin Les Felnettes. At the end, turn left along Rue de la Mairie and return to the junction from the outward journey.

(1) Turn right onto Rue du Château, which runs past the foot of the castle. At the end of this street, turn left onto Allée des Marronniers, then head up to the right via Rue de l’Église, followed by Rue de la Manique, which leads back to the car park (S/E).
