Around Montchevreuil

This is a pleasant route which starts along a road but, after a few hundred metres, crosses a varied landscape with small villages that are pleasant to walk through. You can also admire two interesting small châteaux.

Description of the walk

Park on Rue de la Mairie in Bachivillers.

(S/E) Join Rue André Rousselin (D3), turn left heading north and join the D115.

(1) Continue right until you reach the village exit, keep left at the three-way junction to head towards Jouy-sous-Thelle and continue for about 300 metres.

(2) Take the grassy path that branches off to the right, which is fairly straight. Follow it across the fields, cross the D129 carefully and continue on the other side along Rue du Château de Théribus. Go down this street to the bottom, past the castle and chapel, until you reach a T-junction.

(3) Turn right onto Rue du Bas Mesnil and follow it to Rue Mary Cassath (D123).

(4) At this point, take a short detour to the left to cross the bridge and visit the Château de Beaufresne. Retrace your steps.

(4) Continue along the road, then quickly turn left towards the stadium. Leave the wooded area, continue straight ahead across the fields and rejoin the tarmac road before arriving at Fresneaux-Montchevreuil.

(5) At the first houses, turn left towards Montcel until you reach an inverted Y-junction. Turn right and continue to the junction with Rue du Mesnil (D35).

(6) Cross carefully and take the small path that heads north under the trees, then turns sharply right 150 metres further on. Follow this path through a small wood to come out onto a road that leads left to the Domaine de Montchevreuil. Pass in front of the estate with its impressive gates and continue to the next crossroads.

(7) Head downhill to the right along Rue de la Montagne, which leads back to Rue du Mesnil (D35) at the church and town hall. Cross at the pedestrian crossing and continue straight ahead along Rue du Calvaire. Pass the imposing farm buildings and turn left at the crossroads towards the cemetery.

(8) At the corner of the cemetery, take a grassy path on the right that leads across the fields. Go straight ahead at the crossroads to enter the Bois de la Lune and continue along this path.

(9) At the crossroads, go straight ahead until you reach the edge of the wood. Cross the D3 with caution and continue straight ahead across the fields, then into a small wood where the path begins to descend to a crossroads directly below the power lines.

(10) Take the path on the right, which will take you back to Bachivillers via the cemetery, then along Rue Barrée to the main road, Rue André Rousselin (D3).

(11) Immediately turn left onto Rue André Couve de Murville, then at the first crossroads, turn right onto Rue de Candi. Quickly turn left onto Rue du Moulin, and finally right onto Rue de la Mairie, where you will find your vehicle (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources along the way.

Wear sturdy shoes, as the route includes paths often used by agricultural machinery, which are therefore not very flat.

Worth a visit

The 12th-century church in Bachivillers has three listed stained-glass windows. It is built with flint stones, which you will see in abundance in the fields.

The Château de Beaufresne on the outskirts of Mesnil Theribus was the home of Mary Cassatt, painter and engraver, who was close to Degas.
