Aumont Aubrac – Nasbinals

Twentieth stage of the Camino de Santiago. For this stage, leave the Margeride for the Aubrac. You’ll realise you’re in the Aubrac when the trees disappear – and it’s absolutely stunning! The colours, the landscapes, the cows, the silence, the sky, the rocks. You’ll feel tiny in the face of nature’s immensity.

Description of the walk

(S) Leave the motorhome area and head left onto Route de la Margueride, then continue left onto Avenue Peyre. At the shop called Maison Benoit, take the middle lane onto Route d’Aubrac (provisions available here: bakery, butcher’s, etc.). Continue along the road, go under the railway line, then turn left immediately afterwards onto the path signposted ‘Vers Saint-Jacques’. Follow the railway line until you come to a small white path leading south-west.

(1) Turn right towards the Beauregard housing estate, then right onto Chemin de Beauregard (follow the red and white markings carefully) until you reach a pine forest.

(2) Turn left, go under the La Méridienne motorway and continue to the hamlet of La Chaze-de-Peyre.

(3) Cross the hamlet, then at Casa de Peyre, head right, then left at the crossroads. Walk to the Bastide chapel, situated in the middle of a crossroads.

(4) Head north-west at the stop sign, onto the D987, and walk along the designated hard shoulder to the village of Lasbros. (You can stock up on supplies at the grocery shop in the village centre.) Continue to the small concrete cross.

(5) Turn left.

(6) At the junction between theGR®65and theGRP® Tour du Mont Aubrac, carry on straight ahead to reach the hamlet of Les Quatre Chemins.

(7) Cross the D53 and head west on theGR®65. At the stop sign, keep going straight and walk carefully along the D987 for about 150 m, then turn left onto the small tree-lined path, which leads onto a short, well-signposted tarmac road towards Santiago de Compostela. Continue to the Ferme des Gentianes (bakery on site).

(8) Cross the D73 towards Finieyrols. Walk through the hamlet, noting that you are indeed in Aubrac, where the trees have been replaced by large boulders.

(9) Walk past a granite rock formation known as Roc des Loups and continue until you reach the village of Rieutort d’Aubrac.

(10) In front of the guesthouse (drinking water available here), turn right towards Marchastel. Walk for a long stretch across open ground. Follow and then cross the Bez stream at the D90.

(11) Head right onto the white path, which climbs gently, to reach the hamlet of Montgros and walk through it.

(12) Continue along theGR®65to the junction with the D900 at La Croix de Pierre.

(13) Turn right, walk past the cemetery and first turn right then left to continue along the small path which leads to a Stop sign in the village of Nasbinals. Cross the Route de Malbouzon to continue opposite along Rue du 19 Mars 1962. Walk on to the small metal bridge (E) to find a place to camp (possible on the left by the small bridge beside the river or a little further on to the right of the town hall).

Good evening
Thank you very much for your replies. I’ll therefore split this stage into several shorter sections that I can manage, which will allow me to do it just as I’d really wanted to.
Happy hiking to you all
Kind regards
Michèle

Hello, click on the button to view the total ascent and descent. You will be able to see the elevation profile. The author has rated this hike as very difficult due to the distance, not the elevation gain.
Kind regards.

Hello, Michèle.
To view the detailed profile, you need to open the hike on your computer and display the map in full screen. Below the route, you’ll find your detailed profile.
As for the difficulty, this depends on the distance and the profile. So the 26 km distance combined with the elevation gain classifies the hike as very difficult.
Best regards.

Hello

I’d like to go on this hike, but I can’t walk on very steep inclines. I’m looking for sections with not too much elevation gain, but the elevation profile isn’t clear. How can I see the elevation gain for a section of the route?
The hike is classified as difficult, yet the comments say ‘moderate’
Thank you for your help
Have a nice day
Michèle

A lovely hike of moderate difficulty, not so much because of the technical challenges (445m elevation gain) but because of its length
(26km) lasting 5½ hours (without breaks)
This is the perfect time of year to see cows, calves and the flower-filled Aubrac.
Please note: this walk can become difficult during heatwaves or storms, as there may be strong winds on the plateau.

A lovely walk. Beautiful scenery in the Aubrac.
Not much elevation gain, but quite a few kilometres. It’s best to be reasonably fit for walking.
It’s a popular route as we’re on the GR 65.
I recommend it.

Hello,
I subscribed to VISORANDO thinking I could use this tool to plan the GR65 route from Le Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, but imagine my surprise when I realised this wasn’t possible.
In fact, I was only able to complete two stages, because every time I entered a stage between two villages, Visorando couldn’t find it.
I am extremely disappointed with this subscription, which has been of no use to me on the GR65, the longest hiking trail to Santiago de Compostela.
