From Chabannes to the confluence of the Truyère and the Rimeize

A lovely walk leading to the confluence of the Truyère and the Rimeize, then following the Truyère through unspoilt countryside and traditional farmland. An easy and pleasant route where, if you keep quiet, you’re likely to spot some wildlife.

Description of the walk

Park at the top of the village of Chabanne, next to the picnic area.

(S/E) Take a good path heading north across the plateau until you reach a junction at a place called Les Pergos.

(1) Continue diagonally to the left, then gently descend along a winding path towards the viewpoint at Pont de Basile.

(2) Continue downwards until you finally reach a beautiful meadow at the confluence of the Truyère and the Rimeize. Please note: these are hay meadows; please respect the grass when it is tall.

(3) Then follow the course of the Truyère upstream along a fishermen’s path. The few sections with barbed wire have been made safe. After more than a kilometre, the river approaches a rocky barrier.

(4) When the river runs alongside the rocky outcrop, head up to the left for about 150 metres to go round it via more or less marked paths. This is the only slightly tricky bit of the route. Continue along the river to reach the ruins of the Conzé bridge.

(5) Cut across to the left through the meadow to join a good path and follow it to the left. Where the path bends to the right, carry on straight ahead until you reach a junction, just after a small stream that flows into the Truyère.

(6) Take the path that climbs to the left and follow it to the next junction (elevation 1010 on the IGN map).

(7) Continue to the right and reach Chabannes at a fountain. Turn left and return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Magnificent views of the Truyère Gorges and the plateaus above them.

Clearly we don’t have the same expectations: this is a short countryside walk, not a tourist route. As for accessibility, the water level is low at the moment and shouldn’t hinder progress…
No signposts? That’s precisely why this description exists! It’s a wild route, but with landmarks to guide you.

Frankly, it’s not worth it – the climb is out of proportion to what you’d expect to get out of it. The banks of the Truyère aren’t accessible depending on the water level, so you have to make a dizzying descent from the village of Chabannes, where the only attraction is a farm that sets up tables in the shade where you can rest whilst buying the milk soaps they make. And then you have to climb back up…
Once you reach the riverbanks, you can’t help but realise that you’re getting in the way of farming on the meadows, and that there’s nowhere to sit or take in the view. What’s more, there are no signposts at all: you’re simply on farm tracks. It might be worth a go when the water level is very low, but that’s not guaranteed.

Rural and idyllic! A walk along the banks of a beautiful river that is both lively and serene. Near the rocky outcrop, you have to climb up, go round it, and then head back down to the riverbank via a path that seems to be playing hide-and-seek!!

A pleasant walk along the river, but point 4 proved tricky: the paths were almost non-existent and the terrain was very steep, with brambles and gorse, so it wasn't easy to know where to go!
So make sure you allow plenty of time and wear good walking shoes with a good grip!
