Along the Mourne to the Roches Mazuras

The first part of the circuit takes you along La Mourne, a lively little river with numerous waterfalls and cascades. The second part takes you through the Faux-Mazuras forest, and the third part finally takes you to the top of the Roches Mazuras, in a corner of moorland, where you can enjoy unobstructed views.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at Les Planèzes or on the road that passes in front of the Electricity Museum on the way out of Bourganeuf.

Yellow markings with a yellow ox hoof print.

(S/E) Go down the dirt track between the houses and the meadow.

(1) At the bottom of the descent, do not take the footbridge, but turn left to follow the right bank of La Mourne. Various wooden walkways and steps allow you to follow and approach the waterfalls and cascades.

(2) Cross the footbridge. From this footbridge, stay on the left bank until the end. Ignore the next footbridge. The trail turns right at this footbridge and climbs away from the bank of La Mourne.

(3) On the right of the path, you will see a kind of wooden enclosure. About ten metres before this enclosure, on the left, don't miss a tiny path that leads back to La Mourne. Follow La Mourne, keeping as close as possible to the left bank. Almost at the end of this path, you will see the ruins of an old factory with a large waterfall. The path leads to the D51 at the bridge. Ignore the bridge and turn right. Follow the road for 250 metres.

(4) Turn right onto a forest track that enters the Faux-Mazuras National Forest. Continue straight ahead on this track. At the three-way junction in a bend, take the left-hand track that climbs slightly, not the one that descends.

(5) At the T-junction of the two large tracks where there is a fountain, turn left and follow the track that climbs slightly for 200m.

(6) Don't miss the path on the left that climbs more steeply and leads several hundred metres further on to a crossroads almost at the edge of the forest.

(7) Turn left towards the Roches Mazuras site and follow the grassy path between two meadows. From a grassy roundabout, the path narrows. Climb up the narrow path to reach the Roches Mazuras.

(8) Cross Les Roches and descend via the path that continues and leads back to the grassy path. Return to the crossroads.

(7) Take the path on the left to get a closer look at the chapel and its tiny cemetery.

(9) Return to the previous crossroads.

(7) Turn left to descend towards Bourganeuf. At the first hamlet, at the crossroads, take the first path diagonally between the buildings, follow it to the right, then slightly to the left after the last barn. After 200m, the path leads to a very small road.

(10) Turn right onto the road. This is the only section on the road, but it is not busy and further on becomes a forest road, then a forest track. Continue straight downhill to return to the large crossroads with the fountain.

(5) Turn right and then almost immediately left onto the path closed by a forest barrier. Continue in a north-easterly direction.

(11) At the first intersection, turn left and continue to a road. Take this road on the right for 100 metres and continue on the track opposite. This track descends towards La Mourne. Cross the footbridge.

(1) Take the path that climbs back up to the starting point (S/E).

A beautiful, shaded hike with plenty of cool shade along the Mourne.
We reversed the direction of the hike, which is more pleasant in hot weather.
We set off at around 8.30am, when it's still cool, with the sunniest side of the trail, and finish in the woods along the Mourne at around 11am-12pm.
One of my most beautiful hikes.

Hello,
the most beautiful hike of our stay in this corner of Limousin.
The first part along the Mourne is truly enchanting.
The picnic at the top of the Mazuras rocks allowed us to take a well-deserved rest while contemplating the beautiful landscape. The descent was peaceful with unobstructed views.

A very pleasant and interesting route, even in light rain, also known as the "ox trail"...

Second time on this hike, which took 2 hours and 50 minutes in 2019. Significant improvements have been made to the most difficult sections along the Mourne, with stairs and footbridges replacing the old wooden structures. The rest is perfectly maintained.
It remains perfectly signposted, enjoyable and, as an added bonus for me, I spotted two young deer, which I disturbed a little on two occasions...

Thank you for pointing that out in your comment. It's a lovely walk (in my opinion), it would have been a shame not to know about it. Thanks again!

After several months of work, including the replacement of wooden footbridges with metal ones, the Bois des Bœufs trail is now officially reopened.

But someone needs to fix that damn passage between 1 and 2, for goodness' sake!

Superb hike. Following the Mourne is enchanting, and then the forest route is very pleasant.
One major downside, however: between points 1 and 2, the path is always blocked. As the last review saying that it was still possible to pass through was from a year ago, we decided to take a detour. There are no signs to follow the Mourne from a little higher up. We climbed as best we could straight through the woods to reach a road that we followed until we were directly above point 2, then descended through the woods again. The passage was difficult, with ferns, branches and, above all, brambles making progress very difficult.
The vegetation also makes it difficult to go around the Mazuras rocks, so it is better to climb up and down on the left.
Forestry work has destroyed the track from point 11 onwards.

Superb, and very pleasant, even in cold weather! Hiking in winter is interesting because the trees have no leaves, so you can see the landscape better.
As for the closed section, for safety reasons, we went around it at the top, through the woods, and found the path again at the next footbridge, marked 2: "ignore the next footbridge".

It was a route that I really enjoyed doing again.

Please note that between points 1 and 2, a section is closed with a sign saying "Danger, do not pass, poor condition". This only affects a short section: a descending staircase and the next one going up. In fact, there is no need to hesitate: it is safe to pass, the wood of the staircase may be a little worm-eaten but that's all. Please note that this warning is not there to protect the path or nature (I would not have passed through it), but for the safety of hikers.

Ah! The trap on the left BEFORE THE OLD ENCLOSURE...
If that old enclosure wasn't there, we'd all be lost, wandering around in the bushes...

Nice route, especially the first few kilometres along the Mourne.
Be careful, however, at the fork to the left before the enclosure, as it is easy to miss.
