Description of the walk

Start at Parc du Puy Chaffaud, in Neuvic.

(S/E) Start sign “À la découverte de la forêt”. Turn right onto level ground, following the yellow markings for the fitness trail. A zigzagging route through a park with beautiful trees around a small hilltop.

(S/E) Back at the starting point, take Rue du Petit Paris uphill to the right. Continue straight on for 1 km: at the “les Creux” sign, carry on straight ahead; at the top of a small hill, veer slightly left onto a dirt track.

(1) At the T-junction alongside a meadow, turn right. Peaceful Auvergne countryside.

(2) Cross a tarmac road, then, at a fork in the road at plot number 6, follow the most obvious path to the left to the Étang de la Vergne or Étang du Servaleix.

(3) 200 m further on, at the sign for “Carrefour Antoine Muñoz”, continue straight ahead. You pass through a mixed forest of deciduous and coniferous trees with impressive trunks. Continue along this path for a further 600 m.

(4) At the T-junction, take the path on the left and you will reach a tarmac road (D47).

(5) At the sign for “Forêt Domaniale de la Vergne”, turn right onto the road and follow it for 500 m.

(6) At another sign for “Forêt Domaniale de la Vergne”, the road turns right. Leave the tarmac and take a path on the left at the edge of the forest and fields.

(7) Cross a tarmac road (there is a bench here) and follow the road opposite, which bends to the left. 150 m further on, continue straight ahead along the track for a further 200 m. Take a path diagonally to the left, slightly uphill for 600 m, signposted “Sentier n°5 À la découverte de la forêt”.

(8) At the junction with a tarmac road (D47), take a path on the right at an acute angle. 500 m further on, join another tarmac road and follow it to the left.

(9) At the Stop sign, turn right onto the D47. Enter Neuvic. Cross the D982, then take thefirst street on the left (Boulevard Pasteur), going round a laundrette. Continue along this street for 250 m. At the end, cross to the left past an open-air theatre towards a roundabout. Do not go up Rue du Petit Paris opposite, but turn right onto Avenue des 11 Novembre 1918 et 8 Mai 1945 for a few metres.
(10) Turn left into a lane that climbs towards the Resistance monument, between the Café de la Gare and a petrol station. Turn left at the monument to reach the Parc du Puy Chaffaud (S/E).

A really lovely route with very little tarmac. We didn’t see a soul.
