If you are not hiking the route as part of a multi-day tour, you can plan your journey by public transport here: Getting there – local public transport
The last stage of this circular tour starts in Höchenschwand at the junction of St.-Georg-Straße and Hebelweg, the end point of stage 4.
(S) From the intersection of St.-Georg-Straße and Hebelweg, walk past the Bio- und Wellnesshotel Alpenblick and turn left onto Panoramastraße. Continue straight ahead along Panoramastraße until you reach the K6555 district road. Turn left here and then immediately left again to reach the Kreuzstein hiking car park.
(1) Immediately after the entrance to the hiking car park, the Wolfssteig trail starts on the right, recognisable by a semi-circular steel sculpture with a wolf perched on top and the large sign for the Wolfssteig trail (green W with a wolf and the words "Wolfssteig" underneath) next to the Höchenschwand sign on the top right.
Details on the signage for the Wolfssteig can be found on the left arch of the sculpture just above the forest floor.
Please note: TheWolfssteig trail runs along theWolfspfad trail in some places and crosses it. The Wolfspfad logo is also a W, but in turquoise with the lettering Wolfspfad. Despite this description, it is worth taking a closer look from time to time to avoid accidentally walking an extra kilometre or two.
You pass through the "portal" of the Wolfssteig and continue straight ahead. You can use the Wolfssteig signpost (green W) to find your way.
The trail winds through the forest and is secured with a bridge and wire ropes in exposed areas.
(2) After a few kilometres, you will pass a rest area. Then you cross the stream bed.
(3) Behind it is another rest area with benches and a small hut, the Harzerhäusle.
Continue along the Wolfsssteig and after a few metres you will reach a viewpoint.
(4) This offers a wonderful view of the Schwarzatal valley. Continue along the path, soon crossing the Kalbengraben, then the Hornweg and then the Rüttelbach. Go straight ahead at the next two crossroads and you will reach the Wolfshütte.
(5). Here, in addition to lots of information about wolves, there is also a public toilet, a barbecue area with tables and benches, and a covered viewing terrace.
After a break, continue on the Wolfssteig trail – please note the colour of the signposts! Green:Wolfssteig, turquoise: Wolfspfad – the path leads you slowly but steadily downhill.
You will cross a wider path ("Stampfestraße"), shortly afterwards the Segaler Bach stream and arrive at "Fohrenbachstraße". Turn left here.
(6) Your path takes you past the former Fohrenbachmühle mill (where you can take a break) and, after the crossroads, turn right ("Wolfbachweg"). You walk along the Wolfbächle stream, first through the forest, then along the edge of the forest up to Nöggenschwiel, the rose village.
(7) Follow Wolfbachweg towards the centre of the village, turn right and then immediately right again into Tafelwies and head towards the village sports field. Pass the sports field, keep to the right and walk across the fields around a wooded area and turn left, continuing straight ahead through the woods until you reach the K6556 district road.
Follow this road for approx. 250 m to the right, cross it, keep left and walk along the K6559 towards Bierbronnen. Shortly after entering Oberbierbronnen, at the Gustav-Siewerth-Akademie, the Wolfssteig turns right. You can safely ignore this and continue straight ahead along the road. The Wolfssteig returns to the road from the right after approx. 400 m.
(8) Walk downhill to Bierbronnen ("Birkenstraße") and you will come to a fork in the road. Keep right ("Talbachstraße"). After the left-hand bend, cross the Talbach stream and turn left onto a narrow path at the farm building. This turn-off is easy to miss.
Follow the Wolfsteig trail along the Talbach stream, cross the stream at the end and you will arrive at the K6551 district road opposite the Maria Bronnen monastery. Cross this road and turn right into the narrow path next to the monastery building. After the bridge, walk straight ahead along the Haselbach stream and cross it via a footbridge
(9). A little later, you cross it again via an old, covered bridge. You come out onto a farm track and turn left. The path continues uphill towards an ostrich farm and Keller's farm shop.
(10). If you have room in your rucksack, you can stock up on regional products here and take a short break with coffee and cake. Pass the farm shop and continue uphill across the fields. At the first fork, keep right, follow the path straight ahead and then keep right again.
(11) You will walk towards a T-junction and turn left here. The path continues uphill for a short while, then you will reach the highest point and from here it is all downhill. Continue to follow the Wolfssteig signposts.
After what feels like an eternity through fields and small woods, asphalt and gravel, you will pass the MFB Hungerberg model airfield on your left.
(12) Continue straight ahead and you will come to a crossroads further down. Turn right here.
The asphalt path curves to the right, and at this curve, the Wolfssteig turns left into the forest. Follow this path. After crossing the fields, the Wolfssteig actually becomes a trail again.
At the first fork, take the middle path and continue straight ahead. At the next intersection, turn right.
(13) At the next intersection, turn right again. Here, you are on the Walderlebnispfad (forest adventure trail) as well as the Wolfssteig. You will come to the Franzosenweg and follow it to the left. Walk along a fence until you reach a large square with playground equipment and a kiosk.
(14) You are now in the "centre" of the Waldshut wildlife park. Leave the Wolfssteig, turn right and continue downhill past the Alpine ibex enclosure.
After a few metres, turn left and follow the sign for the Mittelweg (red diamond with a vertical white bar). Keep right at the first fork and continue straight ahead at the next intersection.
(15) You then cross the "Lehmbodenweg" and then the "Mühlenbergweg". After that, the trail winds down to Waldshut.
(16) You will reach the Wolfsackerweg at the Zahnkapelle chapel and continue straight ahead. Next, you will come to the Zahnkäppelweg, which you follow to the right until you reach the Bergstraße. Here, turn left.
At house number 67, turn right, go down a few steps and you will reach Emma-Stoll-Weg. Now continue straight ahead to Brückenstraße, cross the bridge and turn left to Waldshut railway station.
(E) You have reached the end of the last stage of the Albsteig circular tour. You can now comfortably cover the remaining distance to Albbruck by train.
