Aire-sur-l'Adour - Arzacq Arraziguet

The forty-first stage of the Way of St James. This fairly long stage takes you through the villages of Sensacq and then Pimbo before entering the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. This department is the convergence point for all routes to Santiago de Compostela. You will enjoy the landscapes of the Landes and, depending on visibility, you will have some beautiful views of the Tursan and the Pyrenees.

(1) Turn right to pass under the A65 and the motorway exit slip road.

(2) Head right towards the relay mast to climb up a stony path and reach the agricultural plateau at the hamlet of Bégorre. Continue to the crossroads.

(3) Continue left (south) along Chemin de Lourine. Follow a long stretch of gently undulating countryside until you reach a T-junction.

(4) Head right onto the gravel path, then left (south) to cross the Mouneton moors, following a power line. Pass under the power line before reaching a T-junction with the D62.

(5) Turn right, cross the Ruisseau de Pélauze, then head diagonally left towards the silos of the Maïsadour Agricultural Cooperative. Stay on the track through the fields until you reach the junction with the Chemin de Saint-Pé.

(6) Continue to the left and stay on this path, ignoring those branching off to the right. Pass between a small pond and a small chapel before reaching the junction with the D457.

(7) Continue straight ahead (south) along the Chemin de Saint-Pé and arrive at a place called Lafosse.

(8) Continue straight ahead until you reach the fork. Turn right, still on the Chemin de Saint-Pé, following cycle route C24 to Matot. Continue on to Cordonnier and carry on to no. 1880.

(9) Turn right towards the Voie du Puy-en-Velay, onto the gravel path lined with trees on the left. Ride across the fields until you reach the wooded area.

(10) Turn left (south) to continue along a path that crosses a wood before reaching a T-junction.

(11) Head right, go downhill through the woods to pass under a power line and cross the Bahus. Go back up the other side of the stream through the maize fields and arrive at a place called Bret. Continue westwards and carry on until you reach the junction with the Route des Monges.

(12) Carry on straight ahead along the stony path through the fields and continue to the D11, ignoring all the paths to the left and right.

(13) Cross the D11 carefully and continue straight ahead on the small tarmac road to the hamlet of Charitole: there is a picnic area in the middle of the junction. Continue to the left (south) to enter the village of Miramont-Sensacq and proceed to the three-way junction.

(14) Turn right towards the water tower rising above the treetops, passing in front of the cemetery and then Saint-Martin Church. Go straight on at the junction, pass the Stop sign and then the village bakery (refreshments available). Continue to the crossroads, turn left to follow the road to Le Puy-en-Velay, then right to pass in front of Miramont-Sensacq Town Hall: refreshments available at the bakery opposite the town hall. Continue to the junction with the D214, then turn left (south-east) towards Pimbo. Stay on this road, passing through the hamlets of Mahoumé and Couloy to reach Loustaou.

(16) Continue south, pass Arnautaune and carry on to the hamlet of Jamboué de la Lande (abandoned farm).

(17) Turn right onto Chemin de Pérou, following the vineyard on your right, then continue to the hamlet of Galette.

(18) Head right, passing through Pérou and then Lamagnagues.

(19) Continue along a dirt track down to the edge of the woods and then into the woods. Cross a stream and, at the edge of the woods, go straight on until you reach the junction with the Route de Sensacq.

(20) Turn right and head towards the Chapelle Saint-Jacques de Sensacq: drinking water available on site. Pass the church and its cemetery, then turn right onto the Route de la Chapelle de Sensacq. Stay on this small road for about 700 m.

(21) Before reaching Marsan, turn left onto the slightly uphill stony path to Hallet. Pass the hamlet and join the D111.

(22) Turn right at the ‘Give Way’ sign and proceed carefully for about a hundred metres. Head left (south-west) to go down into a wood: be careful, the path is about twenty metres before a junction. Continue along the edge of the wood to reach the D111 in the village of Pimbo.

(23) Turn left, pass in front of the Collégiale Saint-Barthélemy (water point and picnic table) and continue along the D111 until you reach the sign pointing towards the Coteau du Moulin site. Turn right and head down to the first junction.

(24) Continue to the right (west) through a hairpin bend, keeping in the direction of the Coteau du Moulin site. Head down the Route de Cujas, cross the bridge over the Gabas: on the bridge, an Ultreïa sign indicates that you are on the Voie du Puy-en-Velay.

(25) Continue on the GR®65 and leave the Landes department to enter the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Keep heading through vast meadows, passing several hamlets, and continue to the junction upstream of Loustaou. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the D32 at the hamlet of Château-Lassale.

(26) First turn left then right onto the road and continue along the Chemin de Lassalle, which crosses fields of cereal crops. Carry on to the T-junction after Miquéou.

At the end of the path, go past the white house on your right and continue to Lac d’Arzacq, where you will find a picnic area on your left and an ideal spot for camping (E).

Worth a visit

(23) Pimbo is the oldest bastide in the Landes (1268). The Collegiate Church of Saint-Barthélemy was built on the site of a former monastery. The 12th-century Romanesque porch features various carved arches.

Arzacq-Arraziguet: the village is a bastide founded by the English in the 13th or 14th century. In October 1620, King Louis XIII passed through here on his way to Pau, with the aim of annexing Béarn to France and re-establishing the Catholic faith there.

Lake Arzacq (E) Set in a rural, wooded landscape and covering an area of 20 hectares, Lake Arzacq is a lowland lake situated in the commune of the same name. It boasts a fine variety of fish, including whitefish (roach, bream, rudd), predators (zander, pike, perch) and medium-sized common carp. It is highly prized by nature lovers, walkers and anglers for its wild and unspoilt character.
