Aire de la Moure and Baou de l'Aigle

This is a pleasant, easy hike on beautiful, clear tracks and paths, allowing you to discover the Aire de la Moure, a reddish plateau used for training civil defence water bombers, and then the Baou de l'Aigle cliff, a climbing site.

Description of the walk

Coming from Allauch, cross the village of La Fève towards the D908. Go past the canal bridge, then turn left onto the narrow Vallon de la Vache road, marked by a blue sign. Park at the bottom of the valley, near the DFCI barriers.

(S/E) Go through the green gate on the south side of the DFCI track. Follow the track that winds between the pine trees.

(1) Take the path on the right, which runs alongside the track and then branches off, rejoining it further up. Cut across the track to take the path marked with a Red Cross opposite.
Look for the Puits de Midi, restored by a hunting association, below on the left. Ignore the paths on the left and right. Arrive at the bottom of the valley, at a crossroads and a hunting area.

(2) Turn right and walk up the valley through the forest. Note the old drystone shelter on the left and, further on, a restored well. Turn left at the next crossroads and you will come to an underground cistern, no. 248.

(3) Turn right. Note the numerous perches and fire stations. Pass under two high-voltage power lines.

(4) Turn left twice to join the large DFCI track heading north.

(5) Leave the track on the right, then take thefirst path on the left. Pass a large cavity on the left, then asecond, even larger one further on the right. They are roughly protected by a wire fence. Take care. Then rejoin the DFCI track.

(6) Turn right at the cairn onto the red-marked trail, which winds through the trees and arrives on the right at the foot of the Aire de la Moure.

(7) Turn left to go to the top of the plateau, visit it, then turn around and retrace your steps. Otherwise, stay on the right to continue the route that passes at the foot of the red rocks. Join the DFCI track.

(8) Take it to the right. Pass by an underground cistern, no. 174, and continue on the track until you reach two above-ground cisterns, no. 642.

(9) Take the path that passes between the two cisterns, heading south, with Marseille in your sights. The path descends steadily. Pass under a high-voltage power line. After a few rocky sections, you will arrive at a crossroads and a cairn.

(10) Turn right at the cairn. The path becomes a trail through denser vegetation. At the bottom of the valley, after a sharp left-hand bend and after about 200 metres, look for a cairn on the left.

(11) (Optional) Turn left at the cairn onto the steep path leading to the summit of Baou de l'Aigle. Use the rope attached to the rocks to help you reach the summit. Turn back and resume the route.
Turn right at thefirst crossroads (green post).

(12) Pass two fire tanks and take the DFCI track on the right in the Vallon de la Vache. Pass a shed, then, further on the right, a property with horses, then again, on the left, a small cave closed by a gate and, finally, an old well.
Pass the houses and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Avoid hiking during hunting season. This area is very popular with hunters, and there are many hunting posts near the trails. Wild boar hunts are also regularly scheduled.

Do not remain on the Aire de la Moure plateau during water bomber training sessions, which usually take place on weekdays in the late morning.

Perhaps it should be noted that this red-coloured area is a target for the release of fire retardant by the DASCH civil protection aircraft.
These drops do not take place every Thursday, but only on certain Thursdays, so avoid this hike on a Thursday if you don't want to look like Father Christmas when you arrive.

Lovely walk but a slight mistake in the directions at point 10, which wasn't very well signposted. Otherwise, a beautiful route accessible to all.

A very pleasant hike that can be enjoyed with the family. Beautiful scenery and views. We ate at the La Moure rest area, in the sunshine! It is worth noting that there were a few water releases after 2 p.m., but by then we were already well past our lunch break...

One of the most beautiful hikes of the year! Breathtaking views, peaceful woodlands.
Perhaps it should have been made clearer that once you reach the Plateau de la Poure, you have to turn back...
Thank you for this beautiful walk.
