Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Fontaine Town Hall. Address: 1 place de Turenne, 90150 Fontaine.
The route is marked with a yellow ring.

(S/E) After admiring the church and the Turenne lime tree, turn left onto Rue du Tilleul to the north-east. Continue to the D11a crossroads.

(1) Turn right onto this road, which leads to the Aeropark.
At the first roundabout, continue straight ahead. Note the name of the cross street, "Rue du Taxiway-Nord," which clearly indicates that you are approaching the old airport.

(2) At the second roundabout, turn left and follow the runway for a short distance.
Turn right just before the new building and take the pedestrian crossing that has been installed.
Continue towards Reppe, whose bell tower is clearly visible.

(3) At the D27, admire the church, turn left onto Grande Rue D27 and note the many beautifully restored half-timbered houses. At the corner of Rue du Haut Bois, you can't miss the superb decorations by a wood artist in front of his house.

(4) Turn left onto Chemin du Bourbet. Follow its winding path to reach the D22.

(5) Turn left and follow the D22 for 300 metres. Turn right onto a wide gravel path that runs alongside the forest.

Keep an eye on the signposts and turn left at the next crossroads. The path enters the forest and winds its way through it. Turn right onto a wide path 100 m after leaving the forest. Follow it for about 300 m.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left, follow the fields, cross the forest and arrive at the D31 road. At the junction with the D22, continue straight ahead for about 400 m until you reach a path on the left.

(7) Turn left and then immediately right, following the forest and meadows. Cross the Saint Nicolas stream via a footbridge and arrive at Larivière.

(8) Reach the D11 Rue du Général Beuret and turn left towards the south. Cross the entire village.

(9) Reach the church and admire the statue of General Beuret on Place de Montebello. Turn right onto Rue du Margrabant, which leads to the stadium. Cross the Étang Virgie stream and then the Margrabant. Reach the crossroads of a path at the cemetery.

(10) Take the path on the left between the fields. At the forest, bear slightly right and cross the small ditch. Continue through the forest.

(11) Cross the D60 road and follow the path opposite. Walk along the edge of the woods until you reach the D22 crossroads.

(12) Turn left and quickly turn right onto a path. Enter the Fay woods, then walk along them to reach the Grands Champs crossroads.

(13) Turn left and arrive at Fontaine to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Fontaine
The earliest mention of the name Fontanis in the archives dates back to the 11th century, but it is in 1441 that we can identify with certainty the Fontaine that concerns us. At that time, it was part of the fiefdom of Montreux-Château and therefore depended on the county of Ferrette and the House of Austria. In 1458, upon the death of Jean de Montreux, his son Antoine inherited Bretagne, Fontaine, Foussemagne, Montreux-Vieux and Montreux-Jeune, but he was dispossessed of his fief by Archduke Sigismund for having taken the side of Charles the Bold. In documents written in German during the Austrian period, the village was referred to as Brunn or Burnen.

The Turenne lime tree
Planted when the church was built in the 14th century, this remarkable tree is thought to be over 700 years old. During the Alsace campaign in 1674-1675, Marshal Turenne stayed in Fontaine at the site where the lime tree already stood. He won a victory in Mulhouse over the troops of the Holy Roman Empire and a decisive battle in Turckheim. It was classified as a historical monument in 1911.

Fontaine Church
The sanctuary, dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, was rebuilt in 1788.

Reppe
The name of the village first appears in the archives in 1331, when it was called Riespach. At that time, it was part of the seigneury of Thann. In 1590, there was already a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but Reppe was part of the parish of Angeot, located more than 4 km away. It was not until the 1760s that the village became an independent parish and the Church of Saint Blaise was built (a bell was cast in 1766).
Toponymy: Rinspach (1331), Rispach (1460), Rispa (1576), Reichspach (1579), Ripa (1644), Reppe (1793).
Its inhabitants are called Reppois.

Larivière
The name of the village was first mentioned in 1322. It was closely linked to Angeot, which was then an important town hall and the seat of a provostship. In 1441, the village already had a chapel belonging to the parish of Saint-Cosme. It was not until 1741 that Larivière became a parish, to which Lagrange was attached in 1774. The current church, dedicated to Saint Quirin, was built between 1758 and 1789.
Toponymy: In Ryefier (1441), Rifir (1576), Riuiere (1579), Rifir (1644)
Its inhabitants are called Lariviérous.

General Beuret
Georges Beuret was a French soldier and brigadier general during the Second Empire, born on 15 January 1803 in Larivière (then in the Haut-Rhin department). He took part in various campaigns, including the siege of Sevastopol, and was killed leading his troops in the streets of the village of Montebello during Napoleon III's Italian campaign.
The above description indicates that there is a statue of him in Place Montebello in Larivière.

Combined with the Boucle Saint Nicolas route to extend the outing a little.
I didn't meet anyone on this section, which was a little too tarmac-heavy for my liking. Fortunately, there was almost no traffic and I was able to take my time.
There was no chance of getting lost, everything was very clear. And after my 2km detour in the first part, I was fully focused!
In Reppe, I'd like to point out that there's a vending machine selling fresh fruit and vegetables. My rucksack ended up feeling a lot heavier...
Thank you for the hike.

A hike with no interest whatsoever. More than half of the route is on tarmac roads.

Thank you for this message.
The route on Visorando has already been updated to reflect this change.
It now follows a beautiful footpath laid out by the building contractor.
Thank you to the Balisage90 trail markers who monitored the work and have already modified the markings on the ground.

A beautiful walk with good trails, especially since the development between Fontaine Aeropark and Reppe, which runs along the fence of the new logistics zone. The final developments should be completed by the end of 2021. Beautiful views of the Vosges mountains, in particular the Rossberg and the Planche des Belles Filles.

A very beautiful walk, but before arriving at REPPE near the aeropark, there were no more signs, major construction work was underway, trees had been uprooted, and the yellow circle markings on the ground were gone, making it impossible to find the route without a GPS.
A place to rest, with tables, chairs or a shelter, would be welcome on a route of this length. Still, the setting and the scenery make you want to come back.
