Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Bessoncourt stadium on Rue des Violettes.

The route is marked with a yellow disc.

(S/E) From the stadium car park, return to the village via Rue des Violettes. After 50 metres, take a path on the left. It crosses a housing estate, intersects Rue des Rainettes and joins Impasse des Pervenches. First turn left then right to take Rue des Glycines and join the D419.

(1) Turn right, pass in front of the church and turn left onto Rue des Églantines, following it all the way out of the village. At the Y-junction, turn left onto Rue du Fort.

(2) You will arrive at Fort de Senarmont on your left. Continue along Rue du Fort until you reach the D419, turn left and continue for 120 metres, then turn right onto Rue des Lys and left onto Rue des Bleuets.

(3) Take the path on the right to climb Rue des Lilas on the right. At the crossroads, turn left onto Rue des Primevères, which becomes a dirt track. After 1 km, turn left. Leave the Forts hiking trail on your right. Cross the Autruche river. Continue straight on until you reach the junction with the wide forest track.

(4) Turn right and after about 270 metres, take the path on the left. You will then see some reservoirs behind a wire fence. Continue straight ahead. At the next crossroads, turn right, taking care to follow the yellow disc markings. The path arrives at the footbridge over the Madeleine and rejoins a wide forest track.

(5) Follow it for 200 metres. Turn right onto a narrow path and, 400 metres further on, pass in front of the Haut Bois forest shelter. After 100 metres, you will reach the junction with the GRE5: turn left and join the D149.

(6) Follow this road to the left and continue along the first path on the right for 800 metres.

(7) Turn 90° left onto the path. Cross the forest track to reach the edge of the Moulin des Bois pond. After the fishermen's hut, cross the D419. Take the Napoleon bridge over the Madeleine.

(8) Take the small path on the left. It is very winding at first, running alongside the D419, then it opens onto a wide forest path called Chemin des Romains. Turn left.

(9) Continue along this path, ignoring the path that branches off to the left, and 200 metres further on, turn right onto the grassy path that leads to the edge of the woods. Please note that the foresters have been carrying out major work. They have kindly left the sign between two piles of wood. The path forms a 30° angle with the main path.
When you leave the forest, continue for about 500 metres.

(10) At the crossroads, take the tarmac path on the right and after 430 metres, turn 90° left to cross the footbridge over the Autruche river and return to the stadium car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Church of Sainte-Suzanne and the fountain-grotto in Bessoncourt
This 19th-century church was built on the site of a former 17th-century chapel, which was rebuilt in 1737. Closed during the Revolution, it was not reopened until 1843, when it became a proper church.
The fountain-grotto, listed as a Historic Monument, is all that remains of the commune's former wash house, of which only the water chamber remains.

__The Bessoncourt Fort__
Construction began in 1883, and it had a capacity of 800 men. Its mission was to monitor the roads to Mulhouse and Basel. In 1914, with the front line stabilised to the east of Belfort, it was used as a field hospital.
During the occupation of 1940-1944, German troops stored ammunition there.

The Madeleine River
The Madeleine is a river that rises at an altitude of 780 metres at the foot of the Baerenkopf, located in the commune of Lamadeleine-Val-des-Anges. A torrential river, it can change from a trickle to a rapid ready to burst its banks. It crosses the Natura 2000 site "ponds and valleys".

A bit too much tarmac at the start of the route... a shame. Otherwise, no complaints, the rest of the route is very pleasant and very well signposted.

Despite the rainy weather, I'm setting off on this hike just to get some exercise.
The route has been redone and is very reliable, but there's mud everywhere in the woods, with a nice fall.
Uninteresting route but ideal with children. It's a shame we can't
visit the fort!
Best regards

A very pleasant walk.
The route has been changed recently. It now follows a footpath through the middle of a housing estate. A great success.
A big thank you to those who work to preserve our hiking heritage.

A very beautiful hike, easily accessible even for children
Before arriving at Fort Senarmont, we stopped at the Genival farm where the children had the pleasure of meeting Eric, the owner, who gave them a tour of the premises, showing them the little calves, rabbits, etc.
