Aaschlucht from Engelberg

A hike along the adventure trail through the beautiful Aa Gorge from Engelberg to Grafenort railway station. As the gorge is very shady, the route is perfect for hot summer days.

Please note: One bridge on the route is currently destroyed (noted on 27 May 2026). A well-signposted diversion is in place, but this makes the hike around 100 m steeper and 2 km longer.

Description of the walk

(S/E) We start the hike at the station in Engelberg, which we leave heading south. We turn left, then right onto Bahnhofstrasse, right onto Engelbergerstrasse and immediately left.

(1) We have reached the Engelberger Aa. We turn right and follow the river along the southern bank. We take the second right and cross first the Aa and then the small Erlenbach. Then we turn left.

(2) We follow the bank of Lake Eugenisee to the main road. There we turn left, then left again at the second junction.

(3) We have reached the entrance to the Aaschlucht gorge. The footpath now winds its way through the beautiful gorge, crossing several bridges.

(4) At the fork in the path, we keep to the left. After about 1.5 kilometres, we reach the next fork; here we keep to the right and cross the Aa again (5).

(6) The path now takes us past the Obermatt reservoir. At the end of the path, we turn left, then left again at the fork and continue along the reservoir. Next right.

(7) At the fork in the path by the Eugenibach, keep left.

(8) We come to railway tracks and take the next left, then keep right.

(9) We cross the Gerbibach stream, then turn right. The path takes us along the Aa again. We cross the river and turn left. At the end of the path, we turn right and shortly afterwards reach Grafenort station (E). The train takes us back to Engelberg.

There is indeed a detour from point 4; you rejoin the original path after the Obermatt dam (point 6). It’s well signposted; the climb from the detour is fairly gentle, whilst the descent is steeper.
To be honest, I wasn’t blown away by this hike. I didn’t find it all that beautiful.

A brilliant hike!
Well worth doing again and again!

Make sure you press the button 10 minutes before the train arrives, otherwise it won’t stop!
Please note that a bridge has been destroyed (27/05/26); the alternative route is very well signposted with several maps, but you’ll have to climb an extra 100 metres!
