At the edge of the Gâtines, starting from La-Selle-en-Coglès

This circuit symbolically unites two regions by linking the Moulin de Champ Pinel (Brittany) to the Moulin de Roche Garé (Normandy), as this is where the Tronçon river marks the departmental and therefore regional boundary. You will pass through a variety of landscapes as you walk along a beautiful section of the Bois de Gâtines forest and alongside the Château du Rocher Portail, not forgetting to take the opportunity to discover the village of La-Selle-en-Coglès (the monastery of the North).

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the cemetery on Rue des Estuaires.

Yellow signposts.

(D:A) Head north and pass the water tower on your right. Turn left in front of the calvary and continue left around the bend. Continue along the path (not shown on IGN maps) and after crossing a stream, continue right towards Basse Rive.

(1) Cross a road and pass under a power line. 200 m after a left/right turn, take a hairpin turn to the left to come out on a road with a cross in front of you. Turn right until you reach a T-junction. Turn left to reach La Bretonnière.

(2) Turn right and at the wash house, turn left to descend into the valley. Follow the Tronçon and climb up to rejoin the road.

(3) Take the hairpin bend to the left before crossing and follow the path downhill to the right towards the ponds. Turn right to pass between the two ponds and at the road, continue on the left. At Bois Grignard, stay on the road, leaving another route on the right, and continue to Mesnil.

(4) Turn left, cross La Marionnais, then follow the signs for Gué Augeard on the left. Continue until you reach the houses at La Taupinière on the left. Then turn right towards Le Bigot and follow this road to the end. Turn left, then after 150 m turn right towards La Roche Garé.

(5) Cross the courtyard, then leave the path on the left and cross the Tronçon via the wooden bridge. Follow the path at the edge of the woods, which is actually the dry watercourse of the mill, whose ruined foundations can be seen on the right. Go back up into the woods via the path on the left to rejoin a wide stony path leading to the D15.

(6) Continue along the road to the left, then take a sunken path on the right 150 m further on. It ends on the Route du Haut Bassigné.

(7) Turn right to cross the hamlet, then turn left and, after the houses, follow a path on the right (not shown on IGN maps). It leads directly to the Petit Gué well.

(8) After the well, cross the road and continue straight ahead. When the road makes a sharp right turn, turn left onto a path (not shown on IGN maps) heading east along the Bois de Gastines. Continue south along the woods until you reach the hamlet of Le Chatel and a crossroads.

(9) "Off route: continuing right on the road, you can reach the Moulin du Champ Pinel".
Take the hairpin bend to the left and follow the Ruisseau des Échelles stream for a while. Turn right quickly (not shown on IGN maps), pass under two power lines and, after following the stream more or less closely, cross the stream and arrive at a junction of paths.

Red and whiteGR®®37markings

(10) (See Practical Information below) TheGR®® arrives from the right. Take this direction, following the Loisance. As you approach Les Vaux, cross the river by turning left and follow the Route de la Galesnais for about 100 metres on the right. Continue along the path on the left to reach the D102 departmental road.

(11) Take the D102 departmental road to pass Grand Baudusse. At the fork, continue to the right, then turn right onto the Route de la Martinière. Continue along this road to reach La-Selle-en-Coglès, less than a kilometre away. Turn right and continue along the road.

(12) At the end of the road, follow the road on the left.

(13) At Pont Besnard, turn left and immediately after the bridge, turn right to follow the stream. Continue along this path, which winds along both banks of the stream.

Yellow markings

(14) After making a U-turn to cross a stream, leave theGR®® trail on your right, which is marked with another yellow sign, and continue straight ahead. Cross the stream and you will come to a crossroads. Keep to the right and follow the road for about 100 metres.

(15) In the right-hand bend that follows, take the sunken path on the left (not shown on IGN maps). Cross a small country road and you will reach the road with the hamlet of La Médais on your left.

(16) Turn right and take Rue du Pont Sec to return to La-Selle-en-Coglès.

(17) Go around the church on the right. Pass between the war memorial and the town hall, then cross Rue du Clos aux Moines and continue straight ahead into Rue du Prieuré. Turn right into Rue des Estuaires to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This circuit is taken from the "Rando-Guide - Escapades dans le Coglais". Only the starting point has been moved, as it was originally planned between the church and the town hall, where there are only two parking spaces.

La Selle-en-Coglès was known until the 19th century as La Celle-en-Coglais, from the Latin cella, meaning "monastery", and the Breton coglez, meaning "north".

The route crosses private property several times under a right of way agreement. It is therefore essential that everyone respects these areas: excessive noise, picking, fires and camping are strictly prohibited. In 2025, the owners of the "Le Rocher Portail" castle did not wish to renew their right of way agreement. From WPt 10 onwards, the route and description have therefore been modified accordingly to follow the GR® 37 and not its variant which passed through Galesnais and Rocher Portail

Worth a visit

(2) The Manoir de la Bretonnière dates from the 17th century. It has the distinctive feature of a tower rising above the central part. (Private property - no trespassing).

(5) The Roche-Garé mill: perched on the side of this wooded valley for three centuries, it lived to the rhythm of the ticking of its wheel. It was used until 1995 to make wheat flour.

(8) The double-level well at Petit Gué was used until running water arrived in 1960. The upper farm drew water from the upper level, while the lower farm drew water from the lower level. It was restored in 2000.

(9) The Champ Pinel mill (or Champ Pinel) (private property) produced buckwheat flour until a few years ago. The Lord of La Motte, who sometimes resided there, had a jeu de paume court built there in the 15th century.

(12) The Château du Rocher Portal: Château

A beautiful hike alternating between paths and roads.
The only difficulty is that it is impossible to pass beyond marker 9 at the foot of Essarts Castle.
To get around this, take the CD 98 towards St Brice en Coglès until you reach Les Domaines. At the entrance, turn left towards the hamlet of Les Vaux, where the GR 34 is signposted, and follow it for a few metres eastwards to rejoin the hike.
After marker 12, stay on the GR to see the Château du Rocher Portail. The GR will take you back to the trail. This detour avoids an unpleasant stretch of road.
Please note that the map attached to the file is incomplete between points 10 and 11, which corresponds to the tricky section...

Disappointing hike. Long, poorly marked detour around the Château du Rocher Porteil, which required walking 5 km along a national road. Too much road for my taste. A few nice spots, but nothing breathtaking. I live nearby but won't be doing it again.

hello, I did this hike very recently and there is another place that is blocked off and absolutely off-limits: just after point 9, when you have to "turn left at the hairpin bend" and join the stream. The rock gate has also been blocked off with a padlocked barrier and CCTV. it's not just the GR37 variant that no longer has a right of way agreement. Suddenly, there are no more signposts and you have to make an hour-long detour to find the route before point 11, going down to the village of St Brice via the D98 and then back up via the D102...point 9 is quite far from the castle, though...
