The Devil has taken up residence at Le Châtellier.

Park in the cemetery car park. In Saint-Germain-en-Coglès, head towards Montours on the D17. The car park is located on the right as you leave the village.

(S/E) Leave the car park, passing in front of the cemetery entrance, and take the old road on the right that runs alongside the water treatment plant.
At the end of the road, turn right. At the fork, continue to the right and, after 50 metres, take the path on the left (not shown on maps). It leads to another path to follow to the left.

(1) Turn right, heading south-east, then, after a wide bend to the left, head north-east.

Red and white^GR®34markings

At the T-junction, turn left and follow the road that leads to the Moulin du Bas-Châtellier. Follow this road on the left.

(2) Turn right. Cross the streams (the Hunaudais and then the Loisance). At the crossroads, continue to the right.

(3) Continue straight ahead, ignoring two roads on the left, until you reach a crossroads.
On the left of the road leading to Châtellier, you will see a staircase made of logs and earth with very high steps. Take this staircase and continue along the uphill path.

Off the route: At the fork halfway along, leave the^GR® and take the^PR® on the left. The path descends and, before reaching the road, turn right onto the trail where, after 20 metres, try to catch a glimpse of the Malin à la Pierre qui fume (the devil at the smoking stone). Go back up to the fork and turn left.

Continue climbing to reach the business park and the village hall car park.
Continue to the village by taking the path on the left that runs alongside the road.

(4) Pass four contemporary houses on your right and descend the path towards the north-east.
After passing a water catchment on your right, turn right and then left. Turn left before the first building in Montmerson. Cross the main road and continue straight ahead on the path on the right. Cross the hamlet of La Chauvinaie (see note below).

(5) Follow the road on the left for 70 metres, then turn right, heading due north.
When you reach a crossroads with a wayside cross on the right, follow the road to the left and continue straight ahead on the path at the right-hand bend.
Cross the Ruisseau de Fretay stream and continue along the path.

Note the cave on the right, where a procession was held on Assumption Day until the 1960s.

At the crossroads, take the path furthest to the right. Follow it around two bends to the left, then turn right to pass in front of the Parc Floral reception building.

(6) Turn right to cross a landscaped garden, continue across the car park, veering to the left. The^GR® continues on the right.

Yellow^PR® markings

Take the road south, which goes around the park on the left. Ignore a road on the right and 30 metres after the fork, take a path (not very visible as the sign has fallen down) on the left.
Turn right and follow the long, straight tree-lined avenue (this is the old access road to Château de la Foltière). Continue along the road heading south.

(3) Turn right and then take the first road on the left. You will find the^GR® trail markers again^.

No more markings

(2) Turn right. At Vau Besnard, veer left.

(1) Continue straight ahead. Take the first path on the right, then turn right onto the road and left at the fork. Before reaching the main road, take the old road on the left to pass in front of the cemetery and return to the car park (S/E).

The legend of the smoking stone (see introduction) is complemented in other ways:
- It is said more simply that the stone smokes when the weather changes.
- It is also said that it is on this stone that the Devil mints the coins with which he can buy the souls of the unfortunate who make a pact with him.
- Finally, it is said that young girls who cross the Roche au Diable via the very narrow passage before Trinity Sunday (the Sunday after Pentecost) will marry within the year.

A 5.5 km route can be considered by only doing the Châtellier circular route: From the (4) (car park), follow the normal route but at the (3) turn left to rejoin the (4).

La Chauvinaie:
- On a clear day, 37 bell towers, including that of Mont Saint-Michel, can be seen from the top of its bell tower.
- 18th-century houses where you can appreciate the stonework on some of the granite lintels.

Haute-Bretagne Floral Park
The Château de la Foltière estate is home to the 20-hectare Floral Park, which includes 24 sumptuous themed gardens, a garden centre, a shop and a tea room.
