Tour of the old town of Saint-Denis

The starting point is the Sainte-Anne underground car park.

(S/E) Walk up Rue Sainte-Anne until you reach Rue de Paris (the main thoroughfare in Saint-Denis).

(1) Turn left onto Rue de Paris. The route follows this ‘avenue’, veering off it a few times.
At number 49, you’ll find the Maison du Général, now known as the Villa de Région.
Continue on to:
- at No. 39, Villa Angélique,
- at No. 25, the Villa Repiquet (1844),
- at No. 18, the Maison Mas (owned by the General Council),
- and at No. 14, the Maison Carrere,
You’ll reach the junction by the Jardin de l’État.

(2) Walk around it; at the far end is a natural history museum, and all around are numerous species of palm trees and trees typical of Réunion.
Return to the junction with Rue de Paris.

(2) Start heading back down Rue de Paris to reach the junction with Rue du Maréchal Leclerc.

(1) Carry straight on.

(3) Turn left onto it to reach the Grand Marché (at the end of this street).
Return to Rue de Paris.

(3) Turn left again and take in the old town hall and Saint-Denis Cathedral until you reach Avenue de la Victoire; follow this avenue to reach the seafront at Le Barachois.

(4) Walk along the seafront and enjoy the view of the island’s west coast.

(5) Pass by the old Saint-Denis railway station. Cross the main road to reach the small market (fruit & vegetables, spices).

(6) Head towards Rue Sainte-Anne to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Sainte-Anne underground car park (cost around €6/€7 for 5/6 hours) or, if there are no spaces available, you can also park on the street at the same price, but your car will be in direct sunlight.
