Towards the Bois Cornu

Not far from Vareilles, this is a pleasant walk that takes you briefly into the woods in question. From here, it’s perfectly possible to venture as far as the shores of the nearby Étang de la Chaume.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Walk through the village of Fontvieille heading north-east. Leave the village and follow the path, turning right at the junction. At the crossroads, continue more or less straight ahead, leaving the access to the village of Le Peu Barbasson on your right. The path descends through woodland until it emerges rather abruptly onto a road. Follow this road to the left.

(1) At the next bend, leave the road and follow the path which continues straight ahead. Turn left onto another road, then right into the hamlet of La Combe. Leave the hamlet and turn left at the first Fork in the road.

(2) At the bottom of the road, continue along the track to the left until you reach the crossroads at elevation 335 (shared signposting with another route).

(3) Carry on straight ahead along the path that leads into the Bois Cornu. Follow this path for about 700 m, ignoring a junction that branches off to the right (marked ‘randoguide’).

(4) Turn left at the next junction (note: do not follow the direction of the “randoguide” signposting, but go in the opposite direction), and head for the edge of the woods. Follow the edge of the woods and exit via a track on the left. From there, proceed to a new junction, just before the previous crossroads.

(3) Take the path on the right and follow it to the end, ignoring the other paths that branch off to the right and then to the left, to return to the starting point (S/E).

Yellow markings.
Starts from the village of Fontvieille; park in the central car park, just past the hotel-restaurant.
This route is very easy and can be completed in a simple pair of trainers.
Food and drink are available on site, in Fontvieille or a little further on at the Étang de la Chaume.

Worth a visit

The village of Fontvieille: it’s a pleasure to stroll through this peaceful hamlet, flanked by two extraordinary and decidedly unusual buildings.
Étang de la Chaume: a few hundred metres north of the route, you can get up close and admire this ancient pond, created in the Middle Ages and now a haven for anglers and migratory birds.

A lovely walk, but the markings along the route aren’t very clear. That said, the sunken paths are really nice.
